Apt And Witty Witness. Barristers replaced members of the publie at the inquiry yesterday, writes "R. E. Leo Money.

Interest moved from the social to the legal aspect when Sir Ar- chibald was called, because it was on his orders that Miss Savidge was examined.

The tone of his letter to Mr. Syrett, Sir Leo Money's solicitor, has been criticised during the in quiry, and lawyers were eager to learn how the Director of Public Prosecutions would justify his ac- tion from the legal point of view,

Immediately after luncheon there was an impressive array of wigs and gowns in No. 4 Court, women barristers competing with learned men friends for seats in the body of the court. The strug- gle in the corridor between the Bar and the public for-right of ad- mission

For the first time during the five days of the tribunal Miss Savidge was ignored; general interest was centred on Sir Archibald Bodkin.

Hours' Evidence.

He made a perfect witness. In examination and cross-examination he was always at his case, and his replies were not only apt, they were frequently witty.

Leaning against the side of the witness box, with his right hand in a trousers pocket, Sir Archi bald turned a smiling face on the court, "but his geniality was often a mask for a mordant reflection. As a lawyer answering lawyers for two and a half hours he seemed to Le in his element

In the police-court proceedings at Marlborough-street, he said, "there were two oaths against one.. In any action for perjury against" the two police officers I needed Miss Savidge's evidence so that there would be two oaths against two."

Justifying his request to the Chief Commissioner for the services. of an officer of the C.I.D., to make inquiries, Sir Archibald said: "My department never has had a stall

investigate erime. That is the duty of the police."

He dealt with a passage of his letter to Mr. Syrett in which he said that if Sir Leo Money refused to be examined, unless in the pre- sence of his solicitor, be would have to take other steps to secure the in- formation. Sir Archibald declared that what he meant was that he would have to get other corrcborn- tive evidence.

Protecting The Public. "That may have been what you intended to convey," observed Sir John Eldon Bankes, chairman of the tribunal, "but it seems to me it might have meant more than

other words, we can penetrate much Force more deeply by red than by ultra-Weather violet light

In the case of the planets, the difference between the two photo graphs can therefore be attributed to the existence of planetary atmos pheres. That the effect is more than can be accounted for by our atmosphere is shown by repeating the observations

од the moon, which has no atmosphere of its own. It is then found that the difference between the photographs is very much smaller than that which characterises the planetary photo- graphs. The conclusion is that the red light shows the surface of the planet, whereas the ultra-violet light shows its atmosphere, since ultra-violet light from the surface would be absorbed before reaching the Earth.

Replying to Mr. Lees Smith, L member of the tribunal, who asked Wag it a pro- per letter to have written, the Director of Public Prosecutions tartly replied, "Certainly; the pub- lic could not sit down and have these two men in the force, because a victim of theirs refused to give}" information beyond what his solici- tar thought wae material."

Later Bir Archibald observed: "I imagined that Miss Savidge and Sir Leo would have been the last to hesitate to come and tell the whole truth. I did not want the whole of their doings for years investigated and disclosed. I want- ed their history in connection with the acquaintanceship which led up to their being very foolishly in Hyde Park history to support them as reliable witnesses in court. I believe it was their duty to give that information.

That last declaration was really the burden of Sir. Archibald Bod- kin's statement, anil it was a con- tention to which he firmly adhered under examination and examination.
