Liquor sizures have been fre- quent of late. The French liner Sufren paid a fine of £553 last January after the Customs had found 513 bottles of champagne and other liquor upscaled. The Cunard liner Franconia, returning from a Wat India cruise, paid a fine, as did the White Star liners Adriatic and Olympic, the French liner Paris, and other passenger vessels.
Prohibition officers state that pre- viously liquor was lowered from ships in dock into small launches run alongside, but that recently this method of smuggling had been abandoned.
Now, they declare, contraband is placed with legitimate cargo and brought ashore on tracks.
