In the course of an address on Admiralty charts, Admiral H. P. Douglas, the Hydrographer of the Navy, made an allusion to the echo. sounding apparatus now used to ascertain ocean depths. In the last three years navigators have been extremely interested to see ou revised Admiralty charts (which are used by seamen of all nations) the plotting of unfamiliar ses depths, and Admiral Douglas,' ex- plaining this yesterday to Observer representative, said that the new method is adding greatly to our knowledge of the sea.

It was clear that in many places the sea was deeper than could be penetrated by the wire, but how much could not be discovered.. By the new method there is no limit to the depths which can be ascer tained, and German, American, and | Japanese ships are constantly res porting colossal depths. These are marked on the Admiralty charta.
There was a time when no plat- tings were made which had not been backed by a specimen of the bottom of the sex, but with the new method there is no need to doubt the ae- eurney of the depths reported. The greatest up to the present have been reported by the German survey ship Eden in the Eastern Archipelago. They vary between æven and eight, miles.
