How far it will become general in England remains to be seen, but there is no doubt that it has come to stay, and that being so my readers may like to know more about it. I should be sorry to say that it was either a better or worse game than auction; there is ample room for both. The genuine lover of cards must hope that both will con tinue to flourish, for a pleasing variety is thereby provided.
Anyone who plays auction can in a very short time play contract just as well as the older form. In the play of the cards there is no differ: ence whatever. In bidding there is a great "difference externally, but there is no difference in the main feature, which consists in summing up the value of a hand. If a player can sum up his hand at auction" he can do so equally at contract; but having done so, he will bid it dif. ferently because the scoring is different. The scoring, in short, is the only actual point of difference.

In contract, clubs and diamonds each count 20 a trick (for each trick over six); hearts and spades count 30 a trick; and no-trumps counts 35 a trick. The game is 100 points instead of 30; so that, starting from love, it still requires five tricks in a minor suit, four in a major, and three in no-trumps, in order to go
game.
Now the outstanding feature of contract is that you only score below the line the number of tricks which you contracted for. If you make more than your contract, the surplus tricks are not scored below the line, but as a bonus above the Hine. Thus, in order to win a game, you have to contract for as many tricks as are needed to make game. If you undertake a contract of three hearts and make" four you only score 99 below the line for the three tricks and 50 above it for the fourth; and you therefore do not win the game. The game would have been won by bidding four hearts, when the score would have been 180 below the line, and nothing above. It is chiefly on account of this fea ture that the bidding at contract -differs from that at Auction.
