One day rolls into another. Heat pahits, and gossip. The tragedy of the Singapore wife is that she has nothing, absolutely nothing, to do. Housework and bringing up children are unheard of where boys can be hired for £1 a week sad ayaks (nurses) for less.

While civil war rages round Shanghai and Peking, while Hong Kong echoes with the mur derous atrocities of Canton, Singe pore, great junction of all Eastern commerce, and the mouth of the greatest river of rubber in the world, is thriving.

Stately buildings are rising along the water front. New hotels are projected. Harbour develop ment grows space. The "roads" are packed with the greatest maze of shipping in the Far East.

The men, is their crinkly white suits and topecs, are busy making and unmaking fortunes. No men in the East are as prosperous and busy as the Singapore men.

But the Singapore wives-they are forgotten.

It was affirmed by the edurt, how, ever, that it was a serious blow for a man of thirty-five to discover that his wife was nine years older than himself, when he married her in the belief that that she was only five years his senior.
