'You're both wrong' volunteered the Third One "you should say 'Scots'.*

It's all the same anyway' said the Plain One. "Precisely' murmured the Old One, which is why you're all wrong-you should ask for Four Sandy Macs, please.”

HONG KONG'S SURPRISE WIN OVER SHANGHAI.

BIG MARGINS IN TWO GAMES,

A THRILLING MATCH.

[BY R.H.H.]

Fow but the greatest optimists expected Hong Kong to wing more than one of the three foursomes against Shanghai "yester- day, but in spite of expectations Hong Kong are leading by 2 to 1. Two of the matches Gnished a long way from home. Budd and Blinko were all over our leading pair, who had an off-day, but Andrewex and Murray beat their bottom pair almost as badly,

The middle match was a ding dong struggle all' the way, with never more than 3 holes in it, and the eventual wimers were down most of the time. "Five golf was played in this match.

H.E. the Governor was entertained to tiffin at the Club House, and the three teams were introduced to him.

Be-arrangements. There were some re-arrangements in the order of the Hong Kong team, which played Shanghai yesterday in foursomes. Andrewes, who had played with Pendered in the top fcurball against Manila, and Dodi well, who partnered Murray the previous day, changed places, 30 that the matches were

and Pettitt.

The wind had dropped entirely and it was the sticky, juggy sort of morning when it needs a definite 'mental effort to hit the ball at all. Players were soon praying for a little bit of the wind of the day before, even if it did make the game dificult

present, and all three teams were presented to His Excellency,

Afternoon Rounds.

There was some seesaw gol! in the top match on the resumption. Shanghai won the first after very long drives by Budd and Pendered. but the 3rd and 5th went to Hong Kong, leaving them 8 down. 4, 3 win both of the next holes, and by Shanghai was good enough to

two sound halves gave Shanghai the victory by the big margin of 10

and 9.

In the third match there was an

almost equally big win the other way, Andrewes and Murray beating Cumming and Pettitt by 9 and This match does not really deserve to be dismissed too shortly, for the play of the winners was ex- tremely steady. They were out in 38 and had gained four holes, by the 8th.

Tine Golf,

However, I saw little of that match, for by the time I had seen the burial of the top pair by Budd and Blinko, whose golf is always worth seeing whether or no the figures are good, the second match was in such an interesting state that I could not leave it.

The Top Masch. Budd struck the first drive of the day about 9.15 and I set out with this match, hoping to be impressed by Blinko's great length and Budd's accuracy. As a matter of fact, the impressive part of the game was Blinko's putting, while his long game was very erratic. He found all sorts of little "corners which can hardly have been visited since the course was laid out Budd bad to do his best, not always very steadily. successfully, but the home pair were

exploring too and their work round the greens was worse than Shang ini's. A four was good enough to win any hole but a short one and Shanghai got nearly all the fours that were going. In consequence, they were up at the 9th, they hid added another by the 12th and came into till in the almost im- pregnable position of 9 up.

Level Going.

Things were pretty level in the second match up to the turn, where Malcolm and Pilcher stood 1 up. At the 10th, however, Pilcher put down a fine putt for a win, and then Malcolm hit a beautiful iron shot right into the middle of the eleventh green and Hong Kong were 3 down. They looked like winning the gem when Malcolm was glort with his tes shot, but a fine pitch by Pilcher and a stout putt made & half
