LADY FINDLAY'S SEARCH OF THE DICTIONARIES.

To

TSINGTAŬvis SWATOW

Lady Findlay has been electra' president of the Scottish Unionist Association, and in her address to TIENTSIN the association at its conference at Edinburgh she caused much amuse- ment by relating how she looked up the origin of the word "flapper. She said during a discussion on the proposal to give votes to women at 21 am

OSAKA AMOY, MOJL

& KOBE

STRAITS & CALOUTTA...

I thought in my innocence it CANTON mennt girls, whose hair flapped on their shoulders. But that defini- tion cannot apply to women of 91. for their hair would be either coiled round their heads or, in the case of the modern young woman, SANDAKAN it would be cut off."

The next definition I found 1 scarcely like to mention. It was that of a little duck. (Laughter.) I then went to the highest authority-Murray's Oxford Dic tionary and here I found the per fect definition. The classical use of the word is to be found in

Gulliver's Travels."

We are told that flappers were used to arouse the attention and jog the memory of people who, from nb- sorption of any interest, paid in- suficient attention to, what was going on around them. (Laugh- ter.)

If these young voters arouse keener interest in politics among the thoughtless" and indifferent there is no reason to fear the re-

sult of their voce,

Mrs. Wauchope, of Niddrie, thought that women of 21 were not' sufficiently educated. to have the

vote.

to the Mercury Theatre, which ad- joins their house at Hamble, near Southampton. It is an astonish- ingly fine playhouse to find at a tiny place like Hamble. About 230 people can be seated in it, and now they are to be given the chance of coming in their cars or in motor- omnibuses and being admitted at prices ranging from la. 2d. to 75.

The week's programme was to be well varied one. The Mercury boys band were to play and its choir to sing; and there was to be. play, "The Everlasting Choice," Mr. and produced by written Stephen Fry.
