WEEK-END FREIGHT

RETURNS.

NOT MANY SHIPS ARRIVE,

DECREASE IN FREIGHTS.

There was a decrease in freights over the week-end, although they were not quite so low as might have been expected, considering how few vessels arrived, in consequence of the typhoon. There were one or two large consignments of coal, and a certain amount of general cargo.

The total freight brought into Hong Kong for the period ended at 9 a.m. on Saturday was 19.350 tons, of which threa British steamets con- tributed 8,884 tons, 4,000 tons con- sisting of coal, and 2,300 tons of

The presence of the typhoon was very clearly indicated in the shipping returns during the week end..

News, etc.

The harbour as far as it pauld be seen; of course; bore deserted appearance throughout Saturday with only a few merchant vessels at typhoon moorings, the other ships being either at Kowloon Bay, or had put to sen. Among the tips at typhoon moorings was the big liner of the F. & O., the Ruwal Pindi Most of the other vessels were warships, and C.N.C. steamers laid up. The "blow has delayed many vessels in reaching, port and the shipping returns of Saturday morning showed that for the pre- vious twenty-four hours only eight Through freights totalled 11.2 ships had arrived, while those of tons, with British vessels contribut-yesterday morning recorded an en ing 7,803 tons, 3.000 tons being in try of only one, 3,000 tons in another, and 1,013 tens in a third.
