CUNARD AND P. & 0. MERGER DISAVOWED.

A LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE RUMOUR.

Writing to The Nautical Guretta (New York) on the eve of his re- turn to England, Sir Thomas Roy- dea, chairman of the Cunard Com pany, gave a entegorical denial of the rumours current of an import- ant merger of British shipping in - teresis.

"There are uo negotiations," rote Sir Thomas," for an anal- gamation of the P. & O. Company Rumours And the Cunard Line.

were current on the London Stock Exchange just before I left that something of the kind was in con- templation. I see Lord Inchcape. Chairman of the P. & O. Company, T frequently and no suggestion of any such operation has ever been put forward, either by him or by 3. :

The Cunard Company was started in 1910 ns à private venture aud was not incorporated as a company until 1878. In the first balance sheet of the company the subscribed empital was £6,906,209. The assets then were valued at £1,590,-159-Lo day they stand at over £22,000,000 In 1878 the total tonnage of the feet wns 82,054 tons; to-day in. cluding the steamers of associated lines, the total tonnage is 095,063. These are among the interesting facts brought out by Sir Thoms Hoyden at the annual general meets

Cunard Prosperity. Notwithstanding the general de pression British shipping suffered from during 1920, the Cunard Com- pany declared a dividend of 6 por Cent. on the 4,450,180 ordinary shares of issued to, the public. An item of importance brought out by Sir Thomas was that the agres- ment made with the government in 1903, under which the Munritanin and Lusitanio were built, ter minates

on November 16th next when the last annual instalment, Any C130,000 will be repaid to the Government under the agree ment. With the knowledge acquir

ed since that agreement was mado

is is unlikely that any similar

the

agreement will be made in future. With the conclusion of that agreement ends also the pre- sent contract for carriage of mails westbound and the Cunard Line hopes to obtain less onerous terms for the carriage of mails in the future.

The result of the year's working | of the Cunard Line shows a net profit of £516,329, and increase of
