ENGLISH CHANNEL MYSTERY.
SHIP VANISHES WITH ALL LIGHTS BURNING.
"We have searched for hours over maay miles of the Channel, but have. come back without clearing up the mys tery of the numerous distress rockets which were seen off Deal early this morning," said Coxswain William Hoile, of the Deal lifeboat, when he and his crew, soaked to the skin, returned to Deal on November 9th. I can only imagine that there was a collision, and that a ship whose name we do not know foundered.
"The rockets lit up the sky, and were seen not only by the crews of some of the Goodwin lightships but by look-outs at Deal and at Ramsgate.
"A Burst,"
"I got a call at 3.50 this morning that some had been seen to burst at the back of the Goodwins. I jumped out of bed, put on some clothes, and ran through the gale and the driving rain to the

there told me that the Ramsgate coast- guard had telephoned that he, too, had seen the rockets. As I ran back to ring the lifeboat bell to summon my crew I myself saw the flare of a number of rockets.
"The lifeboat was scon" launched, and when we reached the back of the Good, wins we could see, during a lull in the rein squalls," a big steamer with her masthead and deck lights burning, and with a great white light banging over her starboard side zuidship.
Disappointed.
"As we came near the South Goodwin lightship we saw the other rockets being seat up. The steamer with all her lights burning had then been at the spot where the rockets had been seen for fully an hour, but by the time we arrived there, after losing sight of her in the rain, she had disappeared. We saw neither signs of wreckage nor a single human soul, and what happened we do not know,"
