KWANTI STEEPLE-

CHASES.

FIRST MEETING A HUGE SUCCESS.

[BY RAPIER.]

The opening Steeplechase meeting at Kwanti was eminently successful thanks to the excellent arrangements made by those in charge. Aler Potts, the Clerk of the Course, did not spare himself despite the fact that he was just recover- ing from a bout of fever.

There were a fair number of ears in the enclosure although most people seem to have gone out by train. More moturists might be attracted it the charge of 85 for parking cars included Admission to the enclosure for say not more than three persons.

It might also be advisable to have a $10 subscription to the Hunt for those who do not wish to ride. but would like to enjoy the privilege of entry in the Hunters Arnis and to Steeplechase Meetings.

Distinguished Visitors.

H.R.H. Prince George and Rear- Admiral A. J. B. Stirling were interested spectators and there were also a goodly number of Naval and Military Officers present,

The ladies always provide the brighter part of racing and there certainly were some pretty moving pictures in and around the enclosure. They usually have some absurd reason for barking a horse and it is wonderful how often they manage to put their money on the right one much to the surprise and occasional annoyance of their "knowing escorts.

"Bookies."

11

The two bookies gave just the right touch to the meeting and punters were further catered for by a double évent tote, a cash sweep, and a $3,cash sweep for winners. The big 82 sweep was drawn and the results shown after

Much interest centred in Macao's "best pair, Villa Franca and Fernandes, who defeated the three Chinese pairs Macao last August. On Saturday they proved their worth against the Lo bro- thers, doubles champions of the Colony in 1920, and after a bad start defeated the local pair by two sets to love. The match was certainly the best of the series. There were many long rallies and some excellent tennis was witnessed Fernandes outshone his partner, while MW. Lo had an "off" day.

The second set was a match in itself and the struggle for it was often very exciting.
