INTERPORT GOLF
THE SINGLES MATCH BETWEEN HONGKONG AND SHANGHAI
DESCRIPTION OF PLAY.
BOXING,
THR MARQUIS OF CLYDESDALE NOT COMING TO HONGKONG.
GONE HOME.
[BY GADOTYDD.]
The following description of the play
Hongkong boxing enthusiasts will be between the Hongkong and Shanghai disappointed to learn that the Boxing players in the singles match of the inter-arquis," the Marquis of Ctrydendale, port golf played last Thursday at Shang-who was expected in the Colony this hai is taken from the North-China Daily month has cut short his intended tour in
the East and gone home, News of last Friday:
The second day of the interport match between the Shanghai Golf Club and the Royal Hongkong Golf Club resulted in a tie for the challenge cup. Shanghai won three of the singles and Hongkong won two the remaining one was all square. In the circumstances, as Hong- kong bad secured one point in the four- somes on Wednesday, the contest resulted in a tie. After the match the two teams met and resolved that it should be re- played on Monday. Originally it was intended that there should be a golfing gymkhana on that day at Szekingjao, bus this has now been cancelled, and there will be 19 holes foursome play in the morning at Kiangwan and 18 holes singles in the afternoon, and this will decide the destination of the cup.
As on the first day of the contest, play was of a very high order in the majority of cases. Shanghai's Arst man was W. Budd, and be succeeded in defeating A H. Ferguson of Hongkong. A. R. Blinko fall a victim to the every fine, work of L. H. Shewan, who was in his very best form. A. B. Stewart, the former Hongkong champion who was No. 3 in the Shanghai team, had a great tuasie with L. W. Andrewes and finished all square, Stewart missing a three-foot putt at the last hole which would have given him the match and incidentally Shanghai the victory. H. R. Malcolm played a ne game for Shanghai, and won by 3 and against N. L. Smith while E. M. Cumming was defeated by E. T. E. Pendered fairly easily. A V. Pettitt justified his place in the team by beating Captain E. W. Morris by 8
and a."
!
Some of the Play.
With six matches progressing simult aneously it is impossible to give anything like a detailed account of what occurred at the different holes. Budd showed an ascendancy over Ferguson in the morn ing, largely because the latter was not pushing his short approaches and spproach putts up to the hole. In the afternoon things were different. Fergu- son came on to hin form and went out in 37, although having two shots out of bounds. Budd had one out of bounds at the first, another at the second, two at the third and one at the fifth. Otherwise his play was, up to par. Ferguson brought the leeway down to one hale at the 12th, but thereafter Budd declined to make any mistake and won' the match on the 18th green by a and 2.
Both Shewan and Bliako are long drivers, but yesterday Shewan seemed to find the cross wind less worrying than did his opponent. Blinke was seldom as accurate in his driving as usual, and as a result had to extricate himself from a fair amount of trouble. Generally he did so with success, but when one is play ing against a man such as Shewan on his present form, that is not enough, Not only was Shewan driving well-from the 16th tee in the morning he hit so long ball that he was tucked up under the Himalayas but he was making beautiful approaches and his putting was deadly. Blinko gave away a lot on the greens, and both morning and afternoon sacri Eced holes by failing to get down ridiculously short putts. The match ultimately came to dormie four, and then Blinko put up a fine fight, but there was trouble awaiting him at the 17th hole, and he lost by three and one. In the afternoon, going out, Shewan did 38-three under Bogey-while Blinko had a. 38. In the morning Blinko holed out the 18th 454 yards-in three with z drive, iron, and putt.
Malcolm missed a good deal during his two rounds through indifferent putting: otherwise there was much good play in this match. Cumming had to, face an opponent, Pendered who, like Shewan, did a 30 out in the afternoon. At the same time Cumming was not at his best, and both his drives and approaching were erratic. Pettitt was steady through out. He was up against fine driver in Captain Morris, who becasionally, however, would put in a thoroughly bad tee shot to the strong detriment of his chance of winning the hole.

HONGKONG TIDE TABLE,
Frém October 19th to 18th, 1928. HIGH WATER
By the time that the match between AB. Stewart and LR. Andrews was hearing an end, it was seen that this would very probably prove to be the de elding event of the interport contest. Both were playing well, driving long balls, with Stewart, if anything keeping the straighter. At the 12th Stewart was two ap, Jost this advantage by the time the 15th was reached, and then became one down. He brought matters all square by capturing the 17th, and then excitement ran high when they went to the 18th tee Stewart rent beauty down the fairway while Andrews, with a slightly longer ball, was in the rough to the left.Stewart took a brassie in an attempt to reach the green but duffed it, running, however, cleat of the bunkera
