SEVERE BATTLES IN KIANGSI,
THE CANTONESE ATTEMPT TO FINISH THE ALLIES AT ONE STROKE.”
THE TURNING OF THE TIDE.
SOUTHERNERS DRIVEN FROM TEHAN AND NANGHANG.
Mais from the North give detailed accounts of the severe fighting in Kinngsi during the early days of this month Writing from Kiukiang on October 5th the correspondent of the Toho News Agency says:
Seeing that the Southerners had for some time been suffering from reveries everywhere in their fighting against the Allies, especially on the Nanchang front, General Chiang Kai Shek resolved to make one final assault on the Allies before it was too late. All the main army of the " Southern troops were therefore concentrated in, the neighbourhood of Nanchang with the object of recapturing the town.
Meanwhile Marshal Sun Chuan Fang risked a general offensive against Hupch. He sent the mass of his army into Hupeh, keeping only two regiments at Waning. The Cantonese realized his weakness and sent an army of 7,000 Kwangsi troops against him They drove back the regiments at Wuping and actually cut his communications at Iehan. Nanchang was endangered.
THE COUNTER-OFFENSIVE.
مه
The unfavourable situation caused the Allied troops to plan a general counter-attack and mesingea received in Shanghai, dated Nanking and Kiukiang, October 6th, show that this was successful.
Nanking, October 6th-Official message received from the General Staff from Kiukiang: The commander of the Sth Mixed Brigade, General Yes, wirelessed from the field that the enemy west of Teban has been completely cleared out and a messenger from Nanchang brings the message that they are retreating in the direction of Kaona.
Kiukiang" direct, October 6th.The 5th Mixed Brigade and the 8th Mixed Brigade attacked in the direction of Kaoan from Nanchang and defented the Kwangsi troops there who were under General Li Chung Jen. They occupied Tehan, and the Kwangsi troops are retreating westward. #
Kiukiang: When General Chiang Kai Shek beard of the occupation of Tehar, he started an attack on Nanchang but he is retreating toward Kaoan again.
