LETTER FROM THE TRANS

A. NAVAL OFFICER'S
- IMPRESSIONS.
[BY_JANET HALL"]},
Nietzsche says that everything in mar riage is transitory, except a woman's conversation, and such a generalisation might be matched with the statement that a good shopper makes a good wife If this be true, and applies equally to the exes, it is also of interest to study some of the complexities facing the retail
The following letter has been received from a young Frical officer on his way Home vid Siberia. It does not give us much of an insight into, the Bolshevik political system but it is amusing because it conveys the impressions of the average | trade and its assistanta. traveller who has no idea that his der cription of the journey will be made public.
DEAR FROGGIE,We are just going through Cologne: you have no idea how wonderful the Cathedral looks in the twilight, and the old bridge across the Rhine, with the City Arms still engraved on. the huge gate-way,
The seven days across Siberia were monotonously dreary; nothing but plain and forest, Horest and plain, intermin- ably. At Manchouli, by way of variety, we waited in the station from 8 pm. till 3 a.m, while they repaired the line washed away by rain. Consequently instead of arriving in Moscow at noon, we steamed in at 3 am next morning. It was rather a marvellous sensation driving over those historic cobbles at that eerie hour. When we got to the hotel the first faint afreaks (as the Russian novelists 857) were paling the heavens, and one instinctively thought of murder, and crimson, and the Third International, among other gruesome things.

TRICKS OF THE MIND.
The extraordinary case of a man who was so haunted by the belief that he was made of glass that he did not dare enter,

Nicoll, medical superintendent of the to sit down is described by Dr. James Fountain Mental Hospital, in the annual report of the Metropolitan Asylums Board for 1925-26,
This case is paralleled by that of Haajianesti, a Greek.commander-in-chief in Asia Minor during the war with Turkey four years ago. The general was at one time confined in an asylum be cause he was ander the impression, that his legs were made of crystal
The man mentioned by Dr. Nicoll had business acumen and mental faculties of no mean order. He was aware that his

The old order changes at the very begin ning of barter when the shopman says the article is the best on the market, and will wear a lifetime.
