.COURSE.

WHY THE LADIES. LIKE IT.

(Contributed.)

Tis a sad heart that never rejoices." Critics say that the English take their pleasures sadly. The only sad folk on the Deep Water Bay golf course are those: who are waiting for their turn at the first tee. Even those are not really sad. They always "grumble-but that is just because, it is the correct thing to do. It is a method of opening conversation. The conventional way in England is to pass a remark about the weather. At Deep Water Bay the convention is to say "Hullo!

Jones Course is too crowded to-day. Your turn next." That breaks the ice. Jones explains that it

is not his turp next, although he has been waiting for a half an hour is therefore appropriate to suggest that there is ample time for a drink. If Jones accepts, it all helps to pay for the main- tenance of the Facling courses.

IN THE OLD DAYS.

In those happy days of ten years ago, when the reputed population of the Colony was half that of to-day, there was no motor, road out to Deep Water Bay, | Some pl-m-would-walk over the gap from Happy Valley and others would take that perfect walk from the Peak

There are some days in life that stand Mounted Parades at M.I. Stables at out in one's memory as super-days. Onc. 5.30 p.m. on the following dates:-Thurs- of the pictures that will never fade from days, August 5th and 19th. the minds of some of us had for its back. ground a pool in the stream that runs into the valley at Deep Water. Bay. We had had a picnic tifin and there had been plenty of fun during the feed. Then the prettiest girl in the gay party said that she must wash her fingers in the pool Two rosy-cheeked kiddies, just returned from England, immediately jumped up to go with her. She knelt on a big stone to show them how they might see their faces refected in the water.it possible. Did she know, by instinct, what a charm ing picture she and the children together. with the woods and the pool would make? Anyhow she became engaged to one of the bandsome" lads of the party before the end of a month.

A shortly demonstration of the evacua-" tion of casualties during and after an action will be given after each of the Sand Table Schemes. All members of the Afedical Unit are requested to attend

8.-REVERSION.

We played eighteen holes of golf-we were the only party on the course that day. Then we went off in a sampan to a launch which was waiting for us in the Bay. We splashed and swam and äte the usual enormous tea. As the launch Infantry Company, is permitted to revert No. 409 A.-Sergt. R. D. The other fellow who lost had not seen the lady glance at her victim before she gazed so thoughtfully at the sunset. He thought it was Robinson she wanted-and he lost his money.

IN THESE DAYS,

· It was also fashionable, in “the good. old days to ride a pony to Deep Water Bay. In these days some of the more adventurous lads of the Mounted In-.. fantry do it. His Excellency, Sir Cecil Clementi, and family are cften to be seen riding out near the golf course. The usual practice, however, is to go to and ire by motor-car,

On a Saturday or Sunday afternoon you will see a crowd of cars in the park- ing space. Everything from the super- six" of the taipan to the cycle and side- car of the humble assistant. It is, now-i a-days, practically the only method of transport to Deep Water Bay. From time to time a launch may be seen swing- ing at anchor, but coal is dear and you are independent of the weather in o modern car.
