This point of view is not sufficiently appreciated by reformers. The Inspiring Pipe.

י

Careful tests have shown that the effect of tobacco in habitual smokers, if it,Eas any at all on the mental processes, is to increase their accuracy rather than to diminish it. Thus, for instance, if the subject is put to do complex mental ad- dition, the rate at which he can work and the accuracy of his results are markedly increased after he has been al- lowed to smoke a pipe of tobacco. Or suppose that we test the rate at which he can learn new material, we find that this rate is increased, and, moreover, that the accuracy of his memorisation shows a considerable improvement. Similarly, a man after smoking shows less fatigue

work, and even to certain kinds of physical labour. These results are quite at variance with the notion that tobacco is a drug which induces mental ineffi- ciency and sluggishness, for any affect which it has on mental efficiency seems to be favourable rather than otherwise.

The same thing is shown by results obtained in universities and colleges. It used to be thought that smoking lowers the standard of the student-the old iden of the production of mental inefficiency

another form. We know from recent investigations that this was a mistaken conclusion, for, while it is quite true that smokers register a slightly lower percen- tage of marks in examinationis, it is also true that non-smokers are usually not athletes, nor members of university clubs, nor particularly distinguished anywhere axcept in the examination room: For marks, the non-smokers have it, for education, the smokers show the better record.

Bad scholarship, if associated with tobacco, is also associated with athletics, and with everything desirable in univer nity life. rest periods, during which the workers are encouraged to amoke cigarettes, pipes, or anything else they like. According to the promoters of this scheme and it is widely adopted-the few minutes' break with the smoking of a cigarette încrezaes the efficiency of their employees by ar much as fifty per cent. The men are every encouraged to smoke at their work, and it does them not harm, but good.nlm

This is not, of course, the effect of nicotine as a drug; it is something very different, and something which lies at the bottom of the whole of the smoking habit. We all know those curious! little babits, seemingly quite meaning less, which appear in nearly everyone in times of mental excitement or stress. One man, when he is worried, bites his nails, another seems to find relief in twiddling his fingers, another bites the end of his pencil-and so on. There are dozens of these habits, all safety valves in times of emotion. The actions themselves are useless enough, but they serve a pur- pose: in times of mental stress, whether: due to excitement, anxiety, or active thought, there is a certain "relief in do ing something, even if it is something quite ineffective. From our youth up- wards, we are taught not to bite our nails, and not to twiddle our fingers, but no amount of teaching will alter the essentials of our make-up, and so as we grow older we find out, certain standand and sanctioned safety valves with which to replace our individual ones; of thesá smoking is one,
