Careful tests have shown that the effect of tobacco in habitual smokers, if it,Eas any at all on the mental processes, is to increase their accuracy rather than to diminish it. Thus, for instance, if the subject is put to do complex mental ad- dition, the rate at which he can work and the accuracy of his results are markedly increased after he has been al- lowed to smoke a pipe of tobacco. Or suppose that we test the rate at which he can learn new material, we find that this rate is increased, and, moreover, that the accuracy of his memorisation shows a considerable improvement. Similarly, a man after smoking shows less fatigue

This is not, of course, the effect of nicotine as a drug; it is something very different, and something which lies at the bottom of the whole of the smoking habit. We all know those curious! little babits, seemingly quite meaning less, which appear in nearly everyone in times of mental excitement or stress. One man, when he is worried, bites his nails, another seems to find relief in twiddling his fingers, another bites the end of his pencil-and so on. There are dozens of these habits, all safety valves in times of emotion. The actions themselves are useless enough, but they serve a pur- pose: in times of mental stress, whether: due to excitement, anxiety, or active thought, there is a certain "relief in do ing something, even if it is something quite ineffective.
