A WORD OF WARNING. I want here to utter a word of warning, While you study strokes at tournaments, while you study the style of the men and women who make them, don't be led away by mannerisms. Probably without those mannerisms-the-owners-of-them would be better themselves.
Study, rather, the main points of the game. Notice how the players keep on sending good length balls, which keep their opponents on the back line. Think, too, as you watch,, of those two rules. The first is that the ball must "go over the net; that it should go into the court comes only second.
I have often wondered how it is that, while a boy, taking to lawn tennis quickly understands the spin and break of a ball, girls seem to take years to fathom the mystery, even if they ever do so at all. I suppose it is that boys are trained in other balls games, but the duficulties don't seem to me to be very great.
Take, for instance, what is known as the American service. There are two Finds, the plain American, and Reverse American. They break different ways, but all one bas got to remember in this connection is that the ball, 58 we say,

That is to say if your opponent's racket has passed across the ball from left to right, then the ball will break from left to right; if, serving the Reverse American, the racket passes across the ball frum right to left, then that ball will, instead of going into your back-hand court break away from your fore-hand. It's only a matter of moving a few inches, perhape a foot, perhaps a little more against a player with a terrific screw, and you turn the stroke from a difficult one-into a simple one.
NO SUCH THING AS POACHING. Sometimes I think this is prevented be- cause of that non-sensical term which crept into-lawn tennis years ago, "pouch- ing. A man sometimes feels that he mustn't run across the net to cut off a return, because it is going into his part- ners court. This with lawn tennis as it is played to-day, is just rubbish. There is no such thing as poaching. The man at the net must have a free hand, part- cularly if his partner cannot come up and help him. He is there to do the attack- ing, and it must not be dictated to him as to when it shall be done.
Women to-day, are stronger partners in mixed doubles then they have ever been in the history of the game. I fear that some of them, however, do not realise to the full the need for, and the great value of, training for big match play..
If anybody had talked about training" for lawn tennis, like one trains for foot- ball and boxing, twenty years ago, be would have been laughed at. But one has only to be at Wimbledon on a hot day, when a keen five set match is play- ed, to realise what a tremendous physical strain the present day game is: I have seen strong men completely knocked out by such a struggle. Most of them train to-day; some of them go in for careful massage before & match; and there are very few of them whu spend the night before an important match sitting up playing cards. If they do they generally pay the penalty.

The principal match to-day will be played at the Chinese Recreation Club ground between the home team, and the MB. K. team' in B" Division. Their meeting will not have the character of a decisive match to determine the second division Championship, owing to the latter's failure against the University a few days ago, but it will, nevertheless, have important bearings on the Chain- pionship, no matter which side wine. If the Chinese were victorious they may be regarded as certain winners of the Shield, but if the Japanese win, then the teams will have to play a final match to settle who shall bold the title for the year. (Other clubs have lost two matches and are, therefore, out' of "the running).
