THE ROYAL SCOTTISH ACADEMY.

THE HONGKONG DAILY PRESS. SATURDAY, MAY 22ND 1916

A CENTENARY REVIEW. Although the actual date is not till May 20th, the centenary of the Royal Scottish Academy was celebrated by an exhibition opened in the middle of April and by a banquet on the 19th.

Sixty years after the foundation of the Royal Aendemy t London in 1789 twenty-four Scottish artista associated themselves in the establishinçut of 'an Academy in Edinburgh" on the prin ciples of that in London."

The early history of the Royal Scottish Academy is one of a struggle against hostility and prejudice. Art was not in

good way in the Scottish capital; artists were few, and, generally speaking, of little importance. The Edinburgh. BARE KNUCKLE CONTEST ON

MITCHAM COMMON.

EASTER YORN SCENE.

A remarkable bare-knuckle prize-fight, conducted under the regulation rules of the ring, took place on a quiet part of Mitcham Common recently,

The fight went to eight rounds, when one of the contestants gave up owing to an injury. But from the time the ting was made till the last spectator left the scene an hour and a half elapsed, and there was not even a rumour of a police man on the horizon.

ELABORATE PRECAUTIONS.

YI

The fight had been carefully planned beforehand, the site chosen with an eye to secrecy, and every preparation made to secure fair play.
