Most Englishmen imagine that Franco is a Roman Catholic country. In reality there is a sharp division, which is the most permanent and indeed the only per- manent line of cleavage in French poli ties, and separates the Cathobes from those who regard the Church not merely with indifference, but with distrust, and sometimes with hatred. From this divi- aian, which forms two parties in every village, has arisen D secular majority, which gives France her severely secular cheerful. Most Englishmen regard the Frenchman as frivolous and careless, as well as de- plorably lacking in sexual morality. In fact, he is conscientious, frugal, and economical, with an almost fiercely exclu- sive attachment to his family life. The ease with which he can be engaged in conversation does not indicate any open ing of friendship, any more than the RAILWAY frankness with which he will discuss any form of vice indicates a vicious tendency in practice.

Most Englishmen imagine the French. man to he brilliant rather than indus- trious, witty rather than sensible, excit- able rather than patient. They do not know his long hours of unremitting work, his philosophic galety in misfortune, his constant memory for friends as well as for enemies. In physical prowess his real admiration is for feats of endurance, as is shown by the continued popularity of the six days' continuous bicycle race, which is once more being disputed at the Velodrome d'Hiver. One member of each competing pair in this relay contest is in the saddle day and night, and at any hour in the twenty-four there are specta tors and partisans to be found in the gal leries surrounding the arena. If the Frenchman were not patient would he wait in queues, not only at the theatre, but at the post-office, and even at the tax collector's ?
EQUALITY IN THE HOME.
Few Englishmen realise that there are not many towns in France, and that there is a far larger peasant than urban popula tion; that in every family the wife takes at least an equal share of control with her husband and generally holds the purso strings; above all, that France is socially as well as politically democratie. and that" monsieur cannot be trans

The French, who are born with " faire and are trained to good manners;; which does not mean that they are not sometimes very rude-resent the faults of awkwardness almost as much as those of conscious incivility. The knickerbocker! suit on the boulevards still hurts the Parisian pride of capital, "and a Frênch paper the other day remarked that when A funeral passed the Place de POpéra, none of the Englishmen rained their hats.
And yet, of all the foreign tourists m Paris, the Englishman remains undoubt- edly the best liked. The French may find fault with him. They may laugh at him still more; but they get on very well with, him. Democrats though they are, their chief complaint against him at present is that he is drawn from a less cultivated social level than he used to be. They continue to believe that a large part of the British working class is using the dole to pay for its trip to Paria.
A HUNDRED YEARS AGO:" The Enterprise steamboat arrived at Calcutta in perfect safety, after a pas sage of 113 days from Falmouth, This first attempt at steam navigation between Great Britain and India, is a complete failure as to the saving of time, and it will become a question as to how far this mode of conveyance is preferable to the old mode of exiting.
