THE QUALITY OF MERCY. MAGISTRATE'S HUMANÉ DECISION. At the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday, a Chinese, was charged with the larceny of a plank, resisting arrest, and damaging a watchman's uniform.

::

The watchman gave evidence to the effect, that whilst on duty in Nathan Road on the night of the 5th inst. he saw defendant come from a contractor's shed with a plank on his shoulder. He ac costed tim, whereupon a struggle ensued, defendant endeavouring to secure posscs sion of his revolver. He therefore drew the weapon himself, and shot his assail ant in the leg.

..

Defendant gave a complete denial, and said that the complainant had wrongly accused him of stesuing the plank, and set about assaulting him, whereupon he retaliated in self-defence.

Defendant was convicted on the second charge, and in passing sentence of 14 days hard labour, His Worship (Mr. J. H. B. Nihill) said that he had taken into consideration the fact that defendant had suffered considerable pain owing to his

wound.

ATHLETIC SPORTS. FOOR ENTRIES RECEIVED FOR V.R.C. MEETING..

[BY ARGUS.] Though it has been known for weeks that the entries for the V.R.C. Athletic Sports closed at 8 pm on April 18th, the Honorary Secretary, at the closing hour inst evening, received requests for an extension of time from some of the would-be competitors.

Un account of the small number of entries received, it was stated last even ing that the Committee would probably be forced to grant an extension.

In view of the trouble taken by the Committee of Management to arrange the annual sports, it is most regrettable that more public support is not given and without any extension being asked for !

The number of entries received up to 6 p.m. yesterday with a comparison..with last year follow: 1926.

At the previous hearing on Wednesday, the defendant had dramatically accused Mr. Pun San, the second officer of the cruiser.

Another statement made on Wednes day was that the arms were sold to "pro eure food for the hungry crew.”

YESTERDAY'S HEARING..

When the case was continued yesterday morning, Divisional Inspector Aris asked for permission to recall the Captain of the cruiser (Kam Chiu Ping). This was granted.

The Captain stated that when he took over command on October 11th, 1923, the cruiser was in Hongkong harbour and had never left the port since. He thought the vessel arrived here on September

28th.
