Ways and means of improving the re- lation of technical instruction to other forms of education and the industry were discussed at the recent educational con- terence in London.

There is a proposal to tax betting for national revenue. By some it is sternly opposed on the ground that betting is gambling and that gainbling is wrong.

MR. BERLIN AND HIS BRIDE.
A MILLION ENOUGH TO LIVE ON.
REPLY TO FATHER-IN-LAW.
All America was last month gossiping about the romance of Mr. Irving Berlin, the Jewish song writer who on January 5th married without the consent of her parents Miss Ellin Mackay, the daughter of Mr. Clarence H. Mackay, the multi- millionaire.
But though Mr. Berlin's career is an amazing one it is not less amazing than the rise of the Mackay family to social and financial pre-eminence in New York, for the founder of their fortunes went there as an Irish labourer unable to read or write and joined the gold rush" in California, where he struck a mino which yielded more than £20,000,000.
Mr. Berlin, who is 37, is credited with an income of more than £100,000 a year from his songs and musical comedies. He started life as Izzy Balize in a cabaret in Chinatown, where he was employed as a singing writer by a negro, Mike Salter..
He first great success was "Alexan- der's Ragtime Band" and Every- body's Doing It," of which more than 2,000,000 copies were sold. While serving as a soldier in the great war he wrote Yip, Yip, Yaphank," in which song "Oh, how I hate to get up in the morning" was a feature.
When Miss Mackay was nacked off to Europe by her irate father Mr. Berlin thought he had lost his love, and wrote one of his greatest hits, What'll I do, when you are far away and I am feeling blue?"
He followed this with "Remember the night you said I love you.' Remember, remember."
