EDIMIRO, November 15th. In the West frost stopped Rugby, and in the East it was doubtful til almost the last moment whether the big game I have experienced a situation, similar between Heriot's and Stewarts would in all respects except its end, to Heriot's, more on account of their match-

ordinary submarina accidens "such as M 1 has probably now suffered. The incident is described in Straws in the Wind, whose publishers, Messa Eer bert Jankins, Ltd., kindly permit me to

rétoll it.

It was in AE during the war. The submarine was diving easily and com- fortably at a depth of 60 feet; not a suspicion of impending disaster lay in

our minda.

Opinion was inclined to favour winning proclivities than for any con- idence that they were the better tonni. leriot's, as they have so often done before, rose to the occasion, and, after losing the lead, held to their task until they came out victoricas. There was little more than the two points be tween the teams, and Heriot's deserved their victory, if for nothing else than the cohesion of their backs Stewart's had the better all round pack. There is a touch of the old Scottish game about their work in the open, and the Heriot Suddenly, and for no accountable defence was often sore put to it to keep reason, the boat started rising rapidly them out. Watsonians appear to have in the water. We were in the presence turned the corner Glasgow Academicals of enemy ships, and so it was essential got a fright lately, and now Edinburgh we should not come to the surface. But University was completely mastered. all effort at regaining control proved Watsonians played fner football than in futile, the diving rudders had not the all their other games combined this sea- slightest effect towards bringing the son. DIVING FROM SHOTS. Through the periscope I saw an enemy torpedo-boat a bare 100 yards off, tiring hard. At all costs wo must get under again at once, I ordered one of the forward tanks to be flooded, and a few minutes later the submarine took an inclination down by the bows and slipped under water.

Closing off the forward tank and stopping the movement of water ballast from alt to forward, we endeavoured to catch her at 80 feet, but now again the diving rudders seemed powerless to right her, and with an ever-increasing inclination down by the bows she went to 60 and then 10 feet, and was obviously

quite out of control.

Water ballast was expelled as quickly as possible, yet down and down she went -soft., 901, and 100ft., Here was the limit of our depth gauges; when that depth was passed she was still sinking we could rapidly-blindly, for us, as not tell to what depths she was reaching. As a last desperate chance I ordere full spcod astern on the motor. In a few moments-momente in which death seemed close to every man--there came a cry from the coxswain:"She's coming up, sir! and the needle of the depth gauge seemed to jerk itself re- luctantly away from the 100ft., limit mark and then rise rapidly.

The Glasgow Academicals played fine football against Cambridge University, but were beaten in the last minute by the determination of the Cantaba, wha lasted splendidly, despite their haru match against Blackheath two days pre- viously. At one point in the second half Cambridge were 15 points behind. This is Glasgow Academicals' first defeat since December last, when Cambridge Univer sity at New Anniesland easily defeated a team greatly weakened by the absence of players taking part in a Scottish Interna-

onal trial.

IMPOSITION OF A BETTING TAX. QUESTION RAISED IN HOUSE OF LORDS.

The question of the institution of betting tax was revived by the House of Lords agroping on December 1st to a resolution suggesting the Government should consider the matter

Lord Newton, in moving the resolution, estimated the annual turnover of of course betting at two hundred millions sterling

the Government Lord Plymouth was ready to explore any ayenge of new revenue, but an analogy with the Dominions was unfair, as betting there was restricted to the racecourse. The estimated revenue raiseable during the first year would not exceed three millions sterling,
