The operation of luxury taxes in Ger many, Franse and the United States is explained by Daily Mail correspondents as follows:—

IN GERMANY,

IN THE UNITED STATES.

After n hectic and highly puzzling career luxury taxes now play only a minor part in the daily life of the American citizen. They bars been rele- gated with bad business, unemployment. and other annoyances, of 1921 to the archives of yesteryear.

Theatre goers pay 10 per cent, on the amount of their tickets when the price exceeds P., and a similar tax is paid by visitors to football games and other entertainments, including cabarets. All members of clubs still pay 10 per cent. on their annual dues to the Government, and buyers of jewellery, including watches, clocks, opera and held glasses, pay 5 per cent in taxes over and above the amount of their purchase..

Works of art, unless sold by the artist himself, are liable to per cent.

LOST COULD MILLIONS.

TRUSTEES ORDERED TO REPAY.

EFFECT ON HEIRS IN ENGLAND.

Litigation, which it is estimated has cost £2,000 a day for nine years, resulted recently in a report from the Referee making the trustees of the late George Jay Gould's estate of £10,000,000 person- Ally responsible for £10,000,000 lost through financing the railway system as- sociated with their father:

If the four trustees are finally com- pelled to pay back money thus lost in speculation it is probable that one quar ter of the total sum will be collected from each of them and that each will re- ceive back one-sixth. This means that the trustees will each pay £2,500,000 and collect £1,665,000. While it is impossible, experts say, to estimate exactly what effect the verdict will have on the in dividual fortunes of various members of the Gould family, it is certain that the heaviest sufferers will be the heirs of the late George Gould, the eldest son of the founder of the Gould fortunes.

The prospects are that if the courts uphold the referee's decision the late George Gould's share in the estate may be so extinguished that none of his child ren, including Lady Decies, would inherit from him individually, but would merely benefit by whatever amount is ultimately restored to their father's estate,

In this event George Gould's 'second wife, now Lady Dunsford, who bad three children by him, would lose the £900,000 trust fund created for her in his will and £900,000 he, gave her a short while before his death.

Under the decision handed down last month Edwin Gould, Howard Could, and | Mrs. Finley J. Shepherd, their sister, and the estate of the late George Gould share the loss equally. Frank Gould, who while a minor, was not a trustee, is found ac countable for participation in a loan of £1,000,000. His liability is confined to whatever loss has been sustained by that loan.

Anna Gould, Duchesse de Talleyrand, is the only one of the six heirs who is held not liable, it being shown that abo took no part in the managament of the

estate.

The decision of the referee, was that the trustees entered upon & venture to re- tain control of the Missouri Pacife Rail- way and allied lines which was inconsis tent with their duty to the beneficiaries.
