Yesterday, with a smaller crowd pre- sent, (excluding the Autumn Champions) the takings were 837,255 and 833,915 zes- pectively. The cash sweep prizes were | slightly less than at last meeting;
The totalisator was closed before the ponies bad left the paddock for the third event, which accounted for the small num ber of tickets sold-and incidentally a lowed Saracen to start as the "outsider of the party. The early closing was due to the "bell
being rung while mechanic was repairing it. When the mistake was discovered, it was too late to rectify it.

In the final event place tickets were sold with only three runners-a system which should be abandoned in the opinion of many racing men. Doubtless it will have the consideration of the Stewards.
Features of the day's racing were the close finish in the three handicaps, which is a distinct feather in the cap of the
Official Handicapper, even though the penalised ponies had nothing to do with the Enish in any of the races in ques tion.
THE RACING.
L
Events opened with Lieut. Commander Thompson driving" the jady Hailsham to victory by a very short "head" from Solly, who came a bit too late.
In the second event, the same rider, on September, won a sensational race from King of the Plains, when the latter ap- peared to have won the race. At the start, there was a good deal of delay, and in one of the breakaways Chicago ap pears to have ricked his back. He was last throughout though known to be fit and was lame yesterday morning.
September covered the first six furlongs in 139 (29.2-9; 30.9-8; 33,1-6), showing what a
moral" be would have been for the Kilmarnock Handicap "A' class with an impost of 147 lbs.
Much regret was expressed that the pony's owner was not present to witness the race.
The third event saw Mr. Davies steer Saracen to victory, after the peny had dwelt at the start. Just before reaching the foot of the hill Arabian Parrot cut right across the field and it is fortunate no pony was brought down. Saracen cer- tainly ran an honest peny yesterday under somewhat trying circumstances.
"
Mr. Davies followed up this success by winning the St. Andrew's Stakes on Spotted Sand for the second year
succession.

September was first away with Chicago last. At the five furlong post September had a clear lead of 4 lengths, with King of the Plains second, and Chicago tailed off. September was still ahead at the three furlong post, where King of the Flains went after him. Coming into the straight King of the Plains closed up, and a great race ensued. At the distance post September, after being headed, came again, and finished under the whip to win a capital race by 'a head.
Many lengths away, King Emperor was third.

The Novices race fell to Rothesay, ably piloted by Mr. Beidy, though it must be Mr. J. T. Bagram's Cymp. 149 lbs. admitted the race was run to suit his
mount, who finished the last quarter in Mr Roda's Arabian Parrot, 155 lbs. 20.4-3seca, after being last most of the journey.
In the Ayr Plate, Mr. Davies rode his third winner of the afternoon, when he steered King of the Plains to victory.
The final event-the Autumn Cham pions-foil to Saligia, ably ridden by Mr. Doyle, who received a tremendous ovation on returning to scale.
The result created a good deal of sur prise, but I fancy the explanation is not difficult. The three ponies are trained in the same stables and no secret was made of the fact that Saligia was very fit indeed, while neither Local Option nor Grey Morn were quite up to the mark. It was, however, generally believed that over 1 miles the task set Saligia would prove beyond his powers.
The Regent took the lead; but quickly lost it to Arabian Parrot, Saracen being third. At the foot of the hill Saracen went "to the front, followed by Arabian Parrot, The Regent and Gymp. Saracen led round the top bend into the straight, and won somewhat bandily by half & length from Gymp, with Arabian Parroti 13 lengths away.
