THE PORT OF WHAMPOA. The report has reached Hongkong that Ba representativen of overseas Chinese and other organisations are shortly to meet in Canton to discuss the question of the opening up of the port of Whampoa. A large number of steamers have recently made use of the port of Whampoa, but na be Pearl River is too shallow for ocean steamers, it, is deemed to be urgently nécemary that the scheme for opening up Whampoa to commerce should be carried out forthwith. Chinese who have returned from countries overseas are expected to provide the necessary capital and assistance is also expected from the organisations. Commenting on the project, the Canton Gazette says:-

It is said that over 30 returned Chinese have promised to give their sup port and in addition to the assistance of various classes 82,000,000 could easily be Qubscribed. In order to facilitate ship. ping, wharves 'und godowne must first be merted."
