WEMBLEY'S LESSONS.

ADVERTISEMENT OF EMPIRE.

(UY THE RIGHT HON. L. C. S. AMERY, SECRE TARY OF STATE FOR THE DOMINIONS.)

Wembley to day is so much a household word that we are apt at times, I am afraid to love sight of its full signi ficance. Too often we are tempted to say that, like the poor, it is always with us. We are wrong there, for as the end of October the British Empire Ex- hibition comes to an end. Can, -we realise its importance while there is still time?

Wembley is at once a marvellous ail- vertisement of Empire and a far-reach. ing experiment" in popular education. Which of these sides is the more huport- ant it is difficult to, say, for both are vital to our future, and even after re- Ipeuted tours of the Dominion and Colonial Pavilions it is impossible to grasp the effects that must result, and are resulting, from the wonderful displays there.

Every time I visit the exhibition I am struck with the large numbers of school children I see in the grounds, and with the obviously keen interest they take in everything they see. I do not think that it is possible to exaggerate the effect on the development of the Empire of the visits of these millions of "school children to the exhibition." Short as their visits are, they obtain from them. A better idea of the extent, importance, and potentialities of the British Empire than years of study and reading coulų give them. Alter all, seeing is still bo lieving experience is more valuable thea study, however, thorough.

At Wembley the children coine, inte direct contact with lands, civilisations, and spheres of activity far outside their normal experience. Reaf ostriches from South Africa, the actual lifeboat in which the men of the Trevesaz made their gallant voyage across the Pacific, or working model of a New Zealand ther mal region convey more to then than a hundred lessons At Wembley they eng see exactly what life is like in the Dominions Overseas. They can touch the products which have hitherto been only names. Canada, Australia, South Africa are no longer represented by painfully memorised lists of rivers, capitals, im-1 ports, and exports. They become real places to which live real men and women; places to which it is quite possiblito ga and men and women who might easily become their neighbours.zz.

Wembley's influence is broadening. ion Children--and grown-ups as well se in India's beautiful pavilion, in the delicate carging of Hongkong and in the crude designs of West Africa's Walled City evidences of civilisations other than their own, of people with different ideas and tastes. A visit to Wembley has all the effects of a world tour: it gives atend- ards of comparison upon which one's own tastes and ideas may be judged.

THE SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE, But this bringing of the distant parts. of the Empire into the realisation of the people of this country is not merely intellectually stimulating. It is having a practical effect on prosent-day polítics, and present day economies: Migration must in the long run benefit considerably. The Pavilions at Wembley, with their vivid pictures of life overseas, canhot fail to stimulate the spirit of adventure and ambition which has always been! inhre in the British character. Many people today must feel that they could do better abroad, in lands of wider op- Iportunity, but they do not know where exactly to go, nor how to get there. Wembley points the way, It shows exactly where opportunity lies, and in each pavilion, there are men who can tch the prospective settler precisely what will be demanded of him, and how best he can attain his objectiva.

At the same time the exhibition is help ing considerably to swell the trade of the country. An intensive campaign jîn, favour of buying imperially is being con. ducted by the various Dominion and Colonial representatives, the effect of which is bound to be reflected in increas ed inter-Imperial buying. Busineu men, too, are learning a great deal about the latent possibilities of the Empire, and I think it would be quite safe to pre- dict a definite step forward in the deve lopment of the Empire's hitherto un- tapped resources as a result of the ad SHIMONONEKI :-- vertisement Wembley has given to them.
