It is now a little over seven years since the and left Europe in an endea vour to drift across the North Polar Sea, Captain Amundsen left Norway in June, 1918, and hoped to enter the pack- ice off the New Siberian Islands. This hope proved vain; after two years spent along the Siberian coast, the Maud fail- ed to enter the pack-ice, and Amundsen, leaving the ship, made his way to Alaska Returning to the Mardi, he made another effort to enter the pack- ice off Wrangel Island, but was aguin driven back. The Maud was brought to Nome, Alaska, and a third attempt was. made to enter the pack ice

On this occnsion the Maud left Nomo in the summer of 1922 Amundsen, by this time had conceited the idea of Ayijy from Alaska to Spitzbergen, and on July 28th (1529) he parted from his.com/" panions off Paint Hope, the land being left fa charge of Captain Wisting, who then endeavoured to carry out the original object of the expedition--the drift across the Polar Ocean. The Maud was frozen in early in August (1992), and drifted north and west. The ship, however, mado "little, progress, and after two years spent in the pack-ice, lie Alal, having failed to round the New Siberian Islands, was compelled to turn back On August 9th (1924); when Cap- fain Wisting, realized that he could, do nothing more than endeavour to return botne, the Maud was at 76o 25 N and 143° 90 E. In the November following the Woud was back of the coast of Siberin, 50 or morɛ mila south-east of the New San lelands, and there, bring to the grivanced vinson, the lang Arctic winte had to to spent.
