LADY CONSTANCE LESLIE THE PASSING OF A GRACIOUS VICTORIAN FIGURE.

A real link with the past has been broken. by the death of Laily Constance Leslie, who died on June 25th at her residence in London. She was born in 1836, the year before Queen Victoria came to the Throne, at Fulham, and remained a most devoted Victorian to the end of her life. She measured all Royalty in terms of the Quces, and upheld Victorian conventions in the face of all changes.

Lady Constance never lost her chario and vivacity, and was the last source of much of the forgotten talk and gossip of Victorian times. She bought and burnt a number of Lady Cardigan's memoirs, of whom and of which she disapproved, and annotated other copies with versions which will one day be the delight of memoir- writers. Though she knew all the interst ing stories of her time. she never allowed An ankind one to pass her lips. She was devoted Churchwoman of the school of Bishop Wilberforce, just as her politics could be condensed into a prayer that the Crown might never be separated from the Harp of Ireland

THE AGED UNDERGRADUATE.

The Chinese student, who is now much to the fore, is not always so 'youthful as the term suggests, Tens of thousands of students go up every year to the Hanlin College from Jesser seats of learning to be examined for the equivalent of a BÃ, but As a rule only a few score degrees are cou terred. Consequently men present them- selves for the examinations, year after year, until some of them are long past! middle age. There is said, indeed, to be an unwritten rule that if a candidate goes on competing, and failing, for his degree until he is eighty he shall then be considered, to have passed! Some years ago the Governor of Yunnan begged to recommend for special honour a cer tain Lien Hsiang Yang, who, having. obtained his BA at 75 had then, at 80, failed in an attempt to secure a higher distinction.
