In this ease the circumiances were almost precisely similar, and it was only owing to the extremely bad shooting of the Chinese that the foreigners concerned escaped without injury after a decidedly unpleasant experience.

The facts of the case are that Mr." and Mrs. C. C. Boyd were returning from an up-river trip in their private houseboat, towed by a launch, and late in the even- ing passed the Chinese gunboat on the Without ordinary down-stream course. the slightest warning. the guaboat opened fire when the houseboat was. abeam of her. Mr. and Mrs. Buy were the only occupants of the househost, and after the first two or three shots had been. fred they stood up on the deck, under the gunboat's searchlight, thinking that by their thus being seen the gunboat cons nander would realize that a mistake had heen made in opening fire. Shooting con tinued, however, and they were compell-weather.... ed to go below to escape the shots, all of Bala which fortunately missed them. AL together, about 20 shots were fired.
