By defrating Ireland at Dublin in Rugby by 14 points to Scotland cane A stage nearer winning the International Championship. This makes the enring meeting between Scotland and England at Edinburgh the contest of the year. It was a magnificently fought match, both sides playing with the greatest keenness and zest. The pace was a hot one from the start, play swinging from end to end Mid- with suddenness and uncertainty. way through the second period Scotland increased ber half-time lend of 8 points by another goal, from a try gained by D. J. Maclyn as the result of some wonderful passing initiated by J. B. Nelson from a mistake by (i. V. Stephen son. The ball passed along the whole three. quarter line with the exception of L. S. Smith, and thence by way of H, Waddell and A. Walinee to J. W. Scott, and finally to the scorer. It was a mágni. ficent piece of combined work by the backs, together with intelligent backing up by the forwards, the movement start- ing from inside the Scottish 25 line. Then came a snatch try by H. W. Ste- henson for Ireland from a line out, at which the scorer threw out the ball and Look it himself. With only two points between the trans-W. E. the situation. le was noticeable, too, that the Scottish side appeared to last the tremendous page on a somewhat heavy. ground better than their opponents, Several of whom showed signs of distress in the closing critical stages. Ireland, on the other hand, tacked in initiativ and opportunism, particularly ninong the hace division, and their defence was linhle to get in a tangle against the at- racks of the Soltish three-quarters, while their forwards were prone to kick, toa hard in the loose, and thus allow the Scottish defence time to clear. It was battle royal between the packs. In the early stages Ireland got the ball fre quently in the scrums, but the Scots, who all worked tremendously hard, wore them down, and in the end were getting the ball, thanks to J. . . Ireland's hook- ing skill, in nearly every serbm,

At no period cf the Association. Inter national between Ireland and Scotland at Belfast, was the issue of the game ever in doubt. The Scots, despite the heavy ground, played even better than they did against Wales few weeks ago, and the result of three clear goals in their favour did not fatter them in the least extent. Even the most prejudiced Irishman must be fared to admit that thi Caledonians did not exert the utmost pressure at the disposat during the second half, which wns scoreless. In both speed and ball control the Sents were inanitely superior. As the result of this game, the big event of the Association year will be the con- test for the Championship between Eng- uand and Scotland. <
THE LEAGCE
A beavy week's programme in the League brought out some interesting re suits, the draw between the two leaders, Rangers and Airdrieonians being out- standing. It was a gruelling but sports! manlike contest, and pleased the large public who are not partizans of either club, an it leaves the destiny of the Flag still in doubl. Hibs lost all chance of contesting, the Championship.", Heart of Midlothian managed, to get out of the danger: zone. Dandee lost two valuable
