THOM OUR CHINESE CORRESPONDENT.} TAXATION OF FOREIGN

PROTEGES.

The Chen. Kwong Company in Canton," the head office of which is at Hongkong and under Portuguese registration, has heen advised by the Portugese Canau- tato General at Canton that it is not subject to the payment of the numerous military imposts and forced loans by the authorities in Canton, who, however, ars stated to have decided to enforce their demands under all circumstances, in order to discourage, the Chinese mer- chants flocking to foreign consulates for protection. The Portuguese Consulate- General has protested to the Bureau of Foreign Affairs in Canton against the demand on the Chen Kwong Company for the third contribution of a sum equal to its monthly rent but the officer in charge of the 2nd Police Station of the Uth Bistrict in Canton is asserting that all ofcers and employees of this com pany, one of the leading department stores in Canton, are Chinese.
