OUR LONDON LETTER. KING GEORGE'S REVIEW OF HIS FLEET AFTER 10 YEARS,

NAVAL CHANGES AND THOUGHTS ABOUT THE FITURE

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.].

LONDON, July 30th.

AMERICA PAYS A DEPT.

Members of the American Bar Associa tion who have this week concluded their visit to London in an official scuse are. loud in their praises of the reception they have had. Flospitality has been liberally bestowed upon them. They have been feted publicly, and in addition have en joyed entertainment provided by many notable people privately. I believe the feeling uppermost in the minds of the visitors is how they can adequately prove their appreciation of all this kindly Atten- tion. it is probable that there will he a visit of members of the English Bar to the United States; but however that may be it goes without saying that the visit

of educated Americans of the status of the American Bar Association must be productive of good in the promotion of closer ties between this country and the United States.

In connection with their visit the American barristers paid a debt in eir enstances that seem worthy of notice. They went down to Oxfund to look round the famous seat of learning," and at Brisenose College were greatly surprised even shocked, I am told-to discover that Lawrence Washington, great-great grandfather of George Washington, first President of the Republic, left there in debt. It was only a matter of 17. 10., for "battels" (bread and beer) but the money had never been paid.

It seems that Lawrence Washington matriculated at Brasenose in 1621, become & Fellow in 1825, and went down from College in 1633 He departed leaving a personal debs of Tax, and although the authorities made efforts to collect this sum they were unsuccessful. The Ameri- can barristers on hearing about this im mediately held a meeting among them selves, and subscribed the seventeen and tenpence on condition, however, that the question of interest on the original debt was waived! The Principal of Brasenose courteously accepted the money on behalf of the College, and accordingly the books of Brasenose will no longer contain a record refecting upon the good faith of the Washingtons!

ANALYSIS OF A SPRINT."

Inasmuch as full speed cannot be attain. ed för an appreciable time after a sprin- ter's start on account of the delay in overcoming inertia, the maximum speed at some part of the race must clearly be "considerably greater..

It would be a fascinating piece of work to estimate the velocity during every yard of the hundred, and various schemes to that end could casily be employed but all of them are rather elaborate and not too practicable."

to analyse the feat, and gives his conclu- Dr. Adophe Abrahams made an attempt sions in the Evening News Whilst it does not pretend to absolute scientific accuracy if offers some pertinent facts, and is of special interest in that it was adapted to H. M. Abrahams...

His original desire was to obtain a measurement of every stride from pistol to post during an oven time perfonn ance, and he ran a trini on a suitably pre pared track. the actual time recorded by three special watches being 9-54-100 sees.

It was ascertained that the hundred yarda was traversed in 44 strides-f.. an average of 8 feet 9 inches per stride. Of course, the first few strides were very hort, actually 3 feet 3 inches: the optim um stride of 7 feet 6 inches was reached at 44 yard from the start (the 2nd stride).

It was possible to obtain the time at 15 yards and at other successive stages from the start, and from such figures the in- teresting fact emerges that frequency of striding or, what is the same thing, the duration of each stride, is practically con- stant: it is the length of the stride which varies. In the first second only some 16' feet are covered: in the second. about 25 feet.

The runner appears to reach full speed furing the fifth second but it is difficult to be certain that there is not a critical period at about 70 yards when. for a short distance, velocity is at its greatest with a maximum speel of be- tween 12 and 13 yards per second-or over miles an hour...

More simply considered and probably more accurately. 23 yards are traversed in three seconds; this leaves seven seconds for the remaining 77 yards. Ä perfectly co-ordinated sprinter, reaches this velocity of 11 yards par second (92) miles per hour) early in the fifth second and is capable of presenting it for ner, haps, 180 yards, & supposition supported by the various sprinting records which have been established.

The investigations clearly confirmed the impression familiar to runners, that throughout the run the strides taken from the left fodt are always a little, but dis- tiortly, Innger than those taken from the right. Plausible, but not. very satisfying explanations have always been fortheom- ing for the phenemerion,
