TEETII AND HEALTH. THE HUMAN JAW SAID TO BE GROWING SMALLER

A meeting was held by the Ivory Cross at the British Empire Exhibition. Wem- ble, in order to secure publicity for the alligportant problem, of adequate dental treatment for the nation. The King and ques are among the Royal subgribers

to the fund, which constitutes the only organised service providing treatment throughout the British Isles by qualified dentista. Excellent work bas aitently bera carried out by the fund in the Army, the Mercantile Marine, and among dis ebarged men, olcers with limited res sques, cilivian health and welfare or- ganisations, and gentle folk with small means. The meeting was preceded by the sevealb annual meeting, and in the re- port it was stated that since the fund was instituted in 1914 the number of persons who had been dentally assisted was 10,000-an averago of nearly 1,000 a month.

The Marquis of Salisbury (Chairman of the Council), who presided, said that the number of operations performed by the Ivery Cross since its inception was 858.170, apart from other dental ser. viers. It was more than our modern diet that was responsible for the defects in aar teeth, for civilisation had produced OFF countless thousands of years a human jaw which was getting smaller. Unfortuanely Nature did not provide that the teeth should get smaller with the jaw, and they were now too crowded together. A dentist who had recently examined the teeth of a gorilla had as- sure him that they were exactly the same those of a man, with one excep tion, that, instead of their being jammed were gaps in 100 close together, there between. That was the main reason why we suffered so much from our teeth, and. as generation succeeded generation. he sould foresee that the work of the Ivory Cross would be more urgently needed than ever. Its call was, in improving the standard of teeth in the country, to help to an enormous degree to improve the standard of health, and be was gl

to eay that not only had their afforts made an impression on the British public bat they were receiving letters frora the Dominions and the United States to ask Low the Ivory Cross worked and Los to reproduce it in other countries.

Mr. W. F. Mellorsh (Consulting Sur geon Deatist to the Ivory Cross), said that, if the food of the growing child. did not contain the proper mineral con- tituents the teeth suffered. One of the evila of the white roller-milled flour was that the germ was removed in the process of preparing, and it did not have the "A toothbrush necessary mineral content. WAS not of the first importance, as he had said previously, but if everyone would make regular use of floss silk the national bill for deatal attendance would he cut in half. Moreover, if the teeth of everyone in these islands could be rated A1, the hospitals would be only half ns! crowded with ailments of all kinds, in cluding cancer and tuberculosis.

Miss Fletcher (founder and honorary secretary) said that a new venture of the Bociety in seeing to the teeth of men in prisons bad been attended with greas succks.

Dr. Neel Bardswell, of the Loudon County Council Public Health Depart ment, said that if there were only a re- presentative of the Ivory Cross in each of the thirty-two-boroughs in the County of London there was not the least doubt that the vast sums spent yearly on tuber- culosis would have a better result that they did. He had about 15,000 tubercular people on his beeks, and he was con-

ARMISTICE DAY, 1924. THE COMMEMORATIVE. SUNDAY IN NOVEMBER.

The Archbishop of Canterbury has issued the following statement in connre- lion with Armistice Day, 1924:

"Requests are reaching me for direc- tion or advice as to the arrangements to be made in November in connection with the anniversary of the Armistice of 1919. There is no reason to doubt that Tues

be day November 11th will

marked by the customary obarvance, including the Two Wigence In many places it will be possible and desirable to marks that day by religious observances aine, but the inquiries which reach me relate rather to the question whether

Sanday.

Ne Sunday, November th, dr vember 16th, should be chosen as a com- memorative day." It is clear that the conditions will vary in different localities; notably as regards the civic changes which take place on or near November ath.

I have had the advantage of careful Consultation with the Archbishop of York and others, and we are of opinion that, where it can conveniently and appropri ately be so arranged, Sunday, November 9th, will be preferable to Sunday, Novem ber 16th, and while we would, of course, wish to leave discretion to those locally. responsible, our hope is that Sunday, No vember 9th, may be the Sunday on which remembrance is borne of tho szered assO- ciations which have so real a place in English life.
