The following is ashmamry of the OFFICES & 98A, Wanchai Road, speech delivered by Mr. Yonefiro to, President of the N.Y.K.. at the semi. annual general meeting of the Company held at Tokyo, on May 29th:-
The President, in recommending the adoption of the report said that the world's shipping might be said to have reached the rock bottom of depression during last year, and although no devided sign of improvement was yes apparent, no further tendency for the worse was coticeable.
As far as the N.Y.K. was concerned, the President said, the result of oper- ations during the term under revie showed an appreciable improvement, due in a great measure of the augmentation of freight earnings on inward cargo, con sequent upon the increased importation. of materials for recanstruction and other necessaries. Thus the net profit amount ed to 1,600,000 odd, Y.1,100,000 for the previous term.

It was now proposed tant the two items, totalling Y.10,101,090.30, be covered by some of the long-standing reserves, which under existing conditions would not be required for the purposes. originally intended, and which could be suitably utilised at this juncture, without in the least affecting the financial stabilty of the Company, thus:

We have referred to one in which the remarks of a well- known, novelist oecasioned much news. paper comment; in another & doctor in the north was censured by a coroner's jury because it was stated that he re- fused to visit an aged woman without pre-payment of his fee. so that she died unitended by any medical man. As it appeared that the deceased had long been ailing and was quite prat medical nid, a censure seems undeserved. In a
country district where all the circum stances, financial as well as clinical, of a patient are known to the doctor, he may be excused it be demurs to making a long, useless, and unpaid visit with the added disadvantage of an actual out-of-pocket Joss in car expenses. These are all mat- ters outside the kan of a lay critic. It is bad enough for a man who has his living to earn to be expected to work for no- thing, but when he incurs a tangible pecuniary loss by obeying what the public are so fond of describing as "the call of humanity it is necessary for him to strike a balance between his humanity: and the duty he owes to his family. But emphatically this applies nuly, to mich cases as that quoted; a sammons to an emergency or go unknown case-demande a compliance with ethical canons Tras than the exercise of common sense. We live well-lounded suspicion that most of the people so loud in decrying a doctor who hesitates to work without payment are those slowest in meeting their own doctors bill, if, indeed, they trouble to pay any attention to theakh
