In the House of Commons last month. MF. Waddington asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he was awara that the price of German dyestuffs to the British purchaser had not been re- duced by the reduction of 21 per cent. in the reparations duty and whether, as the whole of the reduction in the duty T, No. 289. is being retained by the Germans with out any advantage to the British trader. he would consider the reimposition of the duty; as 26 per cent.
The President of this Board of Trade said he was aware that the price of Ger-. man dyestuffs had not been reduced, but he was informed that practically the whole of the German dyestuffs imported into the country during the last few months had been against contracts made before November 17th last and in respect of which the German Government under- took to continue to refund the amount of reparation levy, provided that delivery were made before the end of March,

The price of deliveries after that date would have been subject to an increase corresponding to the amount of the levy. The present position, therefore, is that the British importer now pass 93 per cent of the purchase price of any dyes imparted to the German exporter and 3 per cent. to the Custems, instead of 74 per cent. to the exporter and 28 per, cent, to the Custers, as was formerly the case. Consequently, no reduction in prices is to be expected as a result of
the alteration in the amount of the levy
The answer to the last part of the ques- tion was in the negative.
