TRADE PROSPECTS AT
CANTON.
The following extract is from a leading article in our Chiness contemporary, the Canton Gazette:-
Judging from the activities of things to be seen on every side we may conclude that trade revival in Canton has once alore begun. The causes for this may be summarised as follows:
(1) With the passing of the New Year holidays businessmen must, as usual, resume their business life. Last year was bad nod quiet year for most lines of trades. But stocks on hand have since been consumed. A general demand for things arose which must be supplied by the merchants.
(2) With the leaving of the majority of the soldiers from the city for the East River, and with the repeated successes. for the Allied troops reported from the front, a general feeling of ease and con- fidence in the minds of the people quickly. returna. For with Chen Chung-ming defeated and his men alt driven out, the general belief is that there will be peace for Canton.
(3) The change of policy on the part at the authorities with regard to the ques tion of the status of the Government property has greatly quietened down the anxiety of the people and has restored their confidence. Real estate business once more begins to show sign of nativity. (4) The campaign to suppress the in- dits entrusted to. General La Fook-un ià to be carried out,and the few important; successes reported by him are also causes that ul to the growing confidence on the part of the rubbe

JAPAN'S TRADE WITH CHINA.
Japan's trade with China during the month of March resulted in exports while imparts totalling Y.30,997,000, amounted to 1.12,003,000.
Compared with the returns for March, 19 exports increased by F.,887,000, while imports decreased by Y.2,150,000.
Since the beginning of the year exports have aggregated F.65.941,000, and m- ports Y.49,924,000.

Swindling the fire insurance companies of 1.200,000 by acts of incendiariem is the charge brought against one Chusuke Mori, resident in one of the suburbs of Tokyo, who is stated to have been caught in the net of practising his refarious trade.
