He took leading part in the negotia- tions for the Angleterman loan to China of £18.000,000 in 1990, and the strain of these negotiations seriously affected his yesight which was congenitally weak It became worse as time wore on and he ultimaty was totally blind. We doubt if ever a Chief Justice bas gone fem this Colony with more flattering aributes of esteem than have been paid Sir William Rees Davies. The leading members of the Chinese community have entertained him at a farewell banquet the leading "members of the British and other communities have done him similar honour,, while he has also been the re- cipient of tributes of bigh respect and esteem from the general body of legal practitioners in the Colony as well as from the members of the Civil Service What need is there further to swell the note of praise" 15

la sutne of the speechè's delivered ho↑ these inuetions reference has inevitally been maile to incidents in the career of Sir William before he can to Hong kong seventeen years ago. The following | more ample sketch of Sig-Williaud's life wilf doubtless interest many readers —

Sir William Hees Davies was born in 18 and was the eldest son of the late Sir William Davies, who was for many years Member of Parliament for Pen- shire. At Eton, where tike all his six brothers he was educated, he had the honour of steering the ten-pared beat (The Monarch), which was the first boat on, the river, and whilst there he acquir ed. also, some distinction on the football field. One of his brothers, Sir Colin Rees Davies, is now Senior Puisne Judge in Trinidad. Having recently been Chief Justice of Bermuda.

From Eton Sir William proceeded to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. degree in 1945. During his M0- journ at the University he was a keen arsan. towing in his college boats on many ocetsions. As a south he was a' kreu rider to hounds over the Welsh country,

On leaving Cambridge he rend in the Chambers of Mr. William Graham, a Counsel with a very large practice at the Bar Sir William was called to the Bat by the Inner Temple in 1947 and, för ten years he practised on the South Wales Circuit, where he 'conducted, under; nomination of the Attorney-General of RapBand, a nutnizer of murder prosecu tions and where also he had a consider- able practice both at the Assizes and Quarter-Sessions.

In 1862 he succeeded his father, after a keenly cinteste election, in the repr. sentation of Petrokeshire in the House of Cannons, where he quickly came into prominence. Sir William is very proud if the fact that I voted for Mr. Glad stone's Home Rule Bill in 1908 and was! one of the majority of which secured the passage of the measure through the House of Commons. Three years later he was again before the electors of Pem- brokeshire and in. 1895, after a secold séverentest, he was re-elected M.P. for his County.

ant ammer.

The loss of his eyesight seems to have brought out in marked measure the won- derful genius of the man. As all rinus he had an extraordinary memory and could quote dates of business letters 10 or 20 Bears back. He typed all his business cur real nge himself and to the very end was an enthusiastic bridge player. He was able to do this by means of Brailo

cards Be was told what was in dummy's hand, and each player named his card as amazing than heavy-

this he played. More ever, was the fact that notwithstanding his bändes, he kept up cross-country riding. He had always been an enthusiastic horse- mas and after the loss of his eight was abb to get about the country by having a mafoo riding in touch with him. The same mafoo used to attend with him at the training for the Peking race meetings and to him in Chinese what was going on and what times were being done aut Mr. Hil lier's knowledge of what the different pon- ies could do was quite striking

Mentives of Chines recall the fact that Mr. Hier was a very great Sinologue and his knowledge of the language and people undoubtedly assured that success which he achieved in his particular realmı

finance. He was also a very keen

musician.

Mr. Hillier was twice married. His first wife having died several years ago. He is survived by his second wife, who is n daughter of the late Dr. Timothy Richard | His eldest son was killed during the war while his other son, who paid a visit to his daughters, who married Capt. Booker, China last year, is at Cambridge. One of is now in London, while another marria
