THE EXILES' CULT. MR. MACDONALD'S SPEECH TO WELSHMEN.

"ኑ
The Prime Minister was the principal guest at a Welsh national dinner, held in celebration of St. David's Day at the Connaught Rooms ou March 1st. The Rev. H. Elvet Lewis, Arch Druid of Wales, presided:
The Prime Minister, responding to the toast of "Our Gassts," said that with Dr. J. A. Hutton he represented the rest of the world that was Scotland. (Laugh- ter.) He confessed that he was afraid when he looked at the menu. He did not know what WILS in store for him. (Laughter.) Had Dr. Hutton- and be been Lentertaining them, they would have been given so queer fare, in the front of which would have been haggis.

Sometimes our hosts are ungrateful enough to tell us to go home. (Laughter.) I am perfectly certain of this, that if we started going home our hosts would im mediately declare a state of bondage to keep us here, because they cannot very well get on without us.
THENGTH IN VARIETY. However, we run a great risk in this foreign land. We run the risk of for- getting our own traditions, of forgetting par op tongue, of forgetting our own enste, of forgetting our own music. of forgetting our own history, and above all of forgetting our own saints. There is one thing we ought never to forget, and it is that variety and individuality alone can save the world. (Cheers.)
The day we all become alike is the last day of human progress. We belong to a great commenwealth, a far-flung common- wealth. That commowealth is not Eng- lish Welsh, or Scottish. It is a commou- wealth which consists of a variety of peoples, each with a great past, each with a distinctive individuality, each with a meutality, taste and inspiration, a guide for conduct, an ideal separate änd diatine. from those of the other races and peoples that compose that common- wealth. The strength of that common- wealth is its variety, its separate in- dividualities, and the man who ever tries to smooth out those differences is the man whose hand lifted, against the per petuation and existence of that great commonwealth. (Cheers.)
I very often regret-being a Conser vative of Conservatives-(laughter) that those amalier distinctions which used to be so prominent in Wales and Scotland, distinction of one willage from another, are disappearing. The schoolmaster has been a great friend to us, but I am not at all sure but that he is smoothing as down' a little too much. The policeman has been a great friend to us, but I am not at all sure but that he is digging a little too deeply the ruts upon which we have to live our lives. Those old village characteristics, those old village charac- ters, those causing, queer men and women in whom Wales and Sentland were So, rich-when we, go" back on our old days, on the old time, to try to discover what memory gives us pleasure, gives us an uplift, what memory in our sad moments makes us happy, how fre- tently it is that we go back to those old special beings, whose quips and sayings nud ways mark the individuality of the Hittle Village, which we belang.
(Cheers.)
Variety being the offspring of indivi duality, is the parent of genius, and there. fore, we find they are the rock foundation of nationality. Let us not be ashamed of our nationality. Let us not allow any thing to smooth it out: let as do every thing to cherish it. Welshmen and Scotsmen and Englishmen, without apolo- gies(cheers-all together working in unison, bound together by common causes, inspired by great ideals that we have be Cause we are human beings. Nationality maintaining distinctiveness, maintaining ideals and co-operation, maintaining progress; St. David, St. Andrew, St. George wearing the same Cross as their badge, possessing the same faith as their final inspiration that translated into secular ideas is the idea and inspiration that is going to keep our nation strong, not only in bulk, but strong in those fino spiritur forces which alone create a nation and keep it alive. (Cheers.)

"When tyres are under inflated there is continual internal friction between the foundation cord and the rubber, causing overheating of the tyre and consequent rapid deterioration.
Water can also enter causing rust, resulting eventually in the rims having sharp edges which cut the walls of the tyre near the bead.
Most cars in Hongkong run on under inflated tyres with the above disastrous results.
