Kowloon City Road, which premises he purchased in Septem- her Inst. The plaintiff was at all material times the principal tenant of the first floor of No. 65. He had been in occupation of that Hoor for about ten years, but there never had been any written agree- ment. For the past six years the rental of the floor had been $11 per month, and at no time during the past ten years had any part of the floor heen used for any purpose other than purely residential The rent had for some time past been collected by a rent.collector. On the 91st November the rent collector served the following notice on the tenant:-
Translation.
To Mr. Wong Chi Lam,.
Of late the cost of shops is increasing every day, and the rents of various shops have been raised in a hurry. In our special opinion the rent of the floor you are occupying is very small, and therefore, we raise it specially by 95 ench month for the purpose of meeting the interest. We beg that you will not refuse. This is our great hope. We write this specially for your informa- *tion.
CHI YENG Seano, Landlord.
Mr. Hazlerigg after reading the letter, commented on the phrase "cost of
shops and pointed out that as part of the premises bad ever been used as a P. As the rents of shops could be raised be considered this to be put into the letter for a special purpose. Dealing with the reason given for raising the rent that the rent was very small" he said that the increase demanded amounted to 43 per cent.. which was utterly unjustifi able, as there had been no expenditure on the premises Three days after the service of the notice the collector called usual 211, but the rent collector demand- ed 816. The tenant refused and the col- | lector fefused to accept the proper sum.
The matter was then placed in the hands of the Secretary for Chinese Affairs and proceedings instituted.

HOW DISEASE IS SPREAD.
OLD WOMAN ATTEMPTS TO DUMP SMALL-POX VICTIM.
A watchman in the Yaumati district saw an old woman acting in a strange manner at 10 p.m. on Sunday so he fol lowed her to seo what she contemplated doing The woman was carrying what appeared to be a sick child. She walked to a piece of waste ground at the back of the Orient Tobacco Factors Company's promises and there laid the child on the ground and attempted to walk away. The watchman arrested her and at the police station it was discovered that the child had died of small-pox
At the Magistracy yesterday the woman told the Magistrate (Mr. Hamil- ton) that she was taking the child to a convent for treatment as it was, not dend when she left her home. She had not dumped the body when she was arrested. She added that she did not know that the infant (four months old) was suffering from small-pox, but thought it was suffer. ing from an ordinary skin disease, ...
His Worship considered the case a very had one and imposed the maximum fine of $200 with the alternative of four months' imprisonment.
