The report and statement of accounts for the year ended December 31st, 192, having begu taken as read, the CHAIRMAN, in proposing the adoption of same, said: -The result of the year's work is very much the sune as that of 1922, except that you will notice the Deep Water Bay Works show a profit of $9,604.08 instead of a loss of $8,077.11 for the previous year.

We propose to pay the same final dividend as before placing 950,000 to reserve for new plant, and writing off some $105,000, as shown in the report, for reim depreciation? We recommend a payment of $13.648.21 as bonus to staff, which has been well earned and will I am sure be approved of by you, and to carry forward $1,347.89 to the new profit and loss account. We had, as be- fore, to contend, with competition from imported cement, but we were well sup ported by a strong local demand, so strong, in fact, that our export business has suffered in consequence, the demand being greater that our resources could cope with.

Last year I told you that we were con- sidering the question of additional plant and studying a new patent kiln which was said to give superior results ascóra pared with former methods. We order ed. therefore, two of these kilns from Switzerland in order to obtain practical results. One is now rearly erected and will, we hope, be working before the end of this month. In the meantime the question of our removing entirely from the present site at Hok Un has arisen, as the factory, in spite of all our efforts to abete the dust, still continues a nuis ance, and we shall not be allowed to remain there much longer. Last year I was very hopeful that we could overcoma the smoke nuisance, but although the considerably make and dust have both been consider and gases froth the kilna, which, cannot be eliminated, and constitute a nuisance in the eye of the law. Negotiations were therefore opened up with the Govern ment who were willing to assist us in the matter, and we have now secured, a grant of a large piece of land this side of Tsun Wan, at what is known as Gin Drinkers' Bay, at the nominal price of 1 cent per foot. To prepare and reclaim this land will cost. we estimate, from 60 cents to 81 per foot and take at least 3 years. It is the desire of shareholders: that a larger and more modern plant should be erected on the new site, and for this purpose they have come forward and offered to provide adelitional capital. In addition to this the Hongkong Gos- ernment have expressed their readiness to assist us with a loan of $1,500,000, ut 5 per cent. interest, so that with our own cash in hand we shall have about $3,300,000 to spend on the new factory: Should this not be enough we shall have available as soon as the new factory, bas been put up the site at Hok Un contain ing some 1,900,000 square feet of land, which is already valuable and will be more so in the future. Of course, the transfer will be carried out with the minimum of disturbance to our business And we shall not touch the oid plant until a large portion of the new factory is working and turning out cement. We shall, of course, try to utilise as much as possible of the present plant in the final installation. No decision as to what system of burning will be come to until we know the result, in a month or two, of the trials of the new mechanical grate

kilo."

This is mur Axact position at present, and the first thing we have to do is to set to work and prepare the new site. The question of the system of burning and making cement to he adopted in a most important one, and I am glad that

3.-Q.) Is there any truth in the re ported stoppage of limestone supplies. from Haiphong? Is there any possibility of these supplies being supplemented by supplies from China Is there any truth in the report that limestone has been found in workable quantities in the New Territories 1

(A.) There is no truth whatsoever in the reported stoppage of limestone sup plies from Haiphong. There is certainly possibility of these supplies being sup plemented by supplies from Chimin fact we are obtaining limestone, in small quantities from the Cantor District now. There is, I am afraid, no truth in the report that limestone has been found in workable quantities in the New Ter- ritories. There is limestone just outside the New Territories, in Mira Bay, and we are endeavouring, through a contrac- tor, to work this quarry now, but we have been greatly hampered by the un- settled state of the surrounding country.

6.-Q.) Does the Company propose to keep the present brick works at Aber- deen! If so, is there any possibility of their extension to meet the increased derhand for bricks.

(A) Yes, we certainly propose to keep on the brick works at Deep Water Bay, and as I have just informed you, we are already erecting a plant for the rano- facture of building bricks. Should this plaat (there is only one kiln being erect- ed at present) be the success we antici- pate it will be, we intend purchasing im- mediately two further kilns.

There were no further questions, and Mr. G. H. Ports seconded the adoption of the report and statement of accounts, which were carried unanimously.

Mr. LOGAN proposed and Mr. DA ROCHA seconded that the appointment of Messrs. C. A. da Boza. Id The Fong, L. F. Mend- ham, and J. Scott Harston as directors rice the Hon. Mr. A. O. Lang, Hon. Sir M. Chater, CM, G. MD, 05.11. Bernard and the Very Rev. Father Rchert (resigned) be confirmed. This re- solution was ananimously carried, as also was one re-electing Mr. R. G. Sheway

a retiring director) to the Board.

Mr HAWKER having proposed, and Mr. FRRD ELLIS seconded, the re-election of Messrs. Linstead & Davis and Messrz. Lowe, Bingham & Matthews as auditors, and the motion having been carried, the business of the meeting was concluded.

"THE THIRD ALARM" AT THE CORONET.

in this matter, we shall have the assist ance and advice of Mr. Conrad F. Mend ham, who has had a large experience in advising and superintending the erection of cement, factories at home..

Our new brick plant. which I informed you last year we intended to purchase, is the great rescue scene in "The Third

is now well on the way to completion, and we hope to be turning out bricks of an exceptionally good quality within two or three months(Applause.)

The CHAIRMAN then dealt with a num ber of questions which had been sub mitted to the Board by Mr. Lat Mox Lin, as follows:-
