In a conversation with. Mr. Kolesnikov, manager of the State Bank here, on his return from Novo-Nikolaievak, I touched on the question of silver currency in Siberia and asked him how the silver rouble was being accepted throughout the entire territory.
He explained that, at first, it was a difficult matter to cope with the influence of Chinese silver in the Extreme East,

but recently, that is to say, since the HONGKONG CIGAR STORE LTD. closing down of the frontier, the Russian rouble is holding its own in the interior. Along the frontier, however, the Russian Large rouble is slightly depreciated. quantities of Russian silver have syste matically disappeared, but recently this feature in not so prevalent. In the days of the Far Eastern Republic, Moscow. collected all the available silver currency existing in Russia Proper where silver, was not legal tender and despatched it to Chita and notwithstanding the repeated consignments, received here, there was a noticencle shortage of silver. At the pre- seat moment, Siberia has enough silver to take care of the situation."
Mr. Kolesnikov thereupon opened the drawer of his desk and displayed a band- ful of the new silver roubles and 60 copeck pieces bearing the replica of the Tsar and the double-beaded engle and remarked. that consignments of this silver had just. recently been received from. Moscow.
I inquired where the silver came from, but Mr. Kolesnikov only repeated "from Moscow." I asked him whom he suspect ed appropriating tho Russian silver and he replied "Japan," I then asked him if the new silver rouble had been minted in Japan, to which Mr. Kolesnikov. did not give a direct answer, but repeated that the now silver was being received from Moscow.
