Yesterday was Ladies' Day as well as Champions' Day at the Races and the prevailing conditions underfoot and over- head were still extremely had, making racing anything but pleasant, especially for the jockeys. When the inecting open- ed the sky was overcast and threatening and during the day several showers fell, which fortunately were of short dura tion. During the previous night there had been showers and if anything the course was in a worse state than on the previous day, notwithstanding the work done overnight in trying to repair the damage done to the track by the previous day's racing. The mud which had been churned up close to the rails had been well rolled in. It was soon cut up again, however, and as the day, progressed: jockeys learned that it was best to give the rails a wide berth and to make the racing along the centre of the track.

On Ladies' Day one generally expects to find the ladies there in the latest Paris modes, but such was not the case yester- day, and if they did sport new frocks and the latest in hats these, for the most part were well hidden under overcoats and umbrellas The atmosphere was some- what oppressive in the afternoon.

The race for the Ladies' Purse was rua: just before the tiffin interval Mr. Peta's pony, Edenball, ridden by Mr. Hill, won the race by a neck from Bent. At the conclusion of the race a large gathering was present in the Grand Stand for the usual ceremony which follows the run- ning of the race. Mr. Hill was conducted by the winning owner to where H.E. the Governor was standing in the midst of a group of well-known owners and public His Excellency congratulated Mr. Hill at only on steering Edenhall to vic- tory in the race for the Ladies' Purse, but on his consistently fine riding which had given hin four wine that day in succes sion. Mr Hill, in reply, said that the good qualities of Edenhall excelled any of his own, and added that the pony was in the most part responsible for Mr. Peta's

Their judgment proved wrong, for ander the very excellent jockeyship of Mr. Hill, Spotted Sund came through in the home straight to win a good race. Sunstar (Mr. Knoli up) took the lead at the start and held it to the home straight. At the Football Stand Fascination Dahlia ran into the second place and maintained this position until displaced by Spotted Sand when this pony came out of the burch just before coming down the Tat. 2nd 3rd straight for home. At the furlong post For the second time Sunstar was tiring and it was doubtful whether the pony would hold out, as Fascination Dahlin was challenging him on the outside. Grey Dragon was the first off, and kept in the picture throughout, being beaten in the straight hy Gymp and King Pip- pin These two made a great finish, but the former was a little the stronger, added to which Mr. Hill on King Pippin was placed well away from the rails and had to plough through many puddles. Both Dahlias-Jewel and Charm-ran prominently until the Rock was reached, when Grey Dragon, Grup, Silver Leaf, King Pippin and Arizona, all went to the the front and took the final bend to the straight in a bunch Here Gyap got the rails and kept them.
