PARIS FASHION NOTES.

[FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT,

ISABEL RAMSAY.]

PARIS, December gard.

A garment that can serve two purposes is the most popular model one can find among the latest lingerie creations. A nightgown that can be worn, also, as a bedroom gown is a favourite example of this new and certainly economic fashion, A model of this kind is somewhas wider than an ordinary nightgown; it fits across the shoulders, and, instead of sleges, is cut with a long, straight arm. hole to the waist; the front and back are: plented and there is always a waistband added in a pale or a dark colour to harmonise with the gown itself. A gar ment of this sort is particularly useful for travelling.

There is a craze at present for edging the hem of nightgowns and chemises with lace or not. Pale colours or white in triple voile are chosen, and an edging of hback lace is ailded.

Petcuts that are long susugh to be worn as slip to a dress, are very popular. seeing that they are practical and dainty at the same time. They are ut all in one, or straight lines, and with just a panel of plesting let in at ench side to afford the necessary width for walking. They look well made up in crepe de Chine and finished as the top with a broad band of double net em- broidered with flowers cut out of the material and appliqued on with the finest of embroidery stitch.

Fancy sets abound and are varied and fanciful enough to please a host of different tastes. A charming set. I was hitmiring recently was in black silk voile. The chemise was cut in two plèces in the farm ofan apron and was bound all round with lace: the tops were drawn together on the shoulders with ribbon bows, and a ribbon belt, placed at a low waist-ine, caught in the lower part of the garment. The knickers to match were slit up the outerside of each leg and were edged with a lace frill that led in the gap where the opening of the chemisel occurred. 22

The neck and wide-cut armholes are hand with thick silk cord that, crossES in front so as to form the Empire luc, passes to the back, again crosses and anally ties at the side. A secrop of real Ince fills in the low V. decolletage in Irani. A scalloped hem adds a good

For everyday wear, many prefer to bind the edges of their undies with a plain or coloured border cut on the cross, id place of lace ár embroidery. This looks actractive and possesses tho advantage of wearing and standing rough washing much better than either lace or embroidery. White on apricot. looks wall; likewise, pink on mauve, blue on pink, and black on white and all shades.

Beaded shoulder straps Barros metal chains are preferred to ribbon shoulder-straps for undies destined for evening wear, as they show so much less hrough a semi-transparent material They are fixed with a patent clasp that fits into an eyelet-hole worked-in the chemise or petticoat, so that, if the dress is devoid of botli shoulders and sleeves, these straps can be slipped off and the expanse of desh be left quite hare.

Nothing could be more dainty, delicate -and costly than the clothes with which modern mothers welcome King Baby into this vale of tears. Only the finest and richest of materials are used. and ther are further embellished by racans of deli- cate lace and cobweb, hand embroidery. A kimono shape is chosen in preference to all other,

The matince jacket-that most charm- ing of all garments of a baby's layette

aturally, lends itself to the most varied forms of dainty treatment. Thick crepe- de-Chine heavily embroidered ja silk looks well, but more attractive still are those jackets made of fine nes and either finished off with tiny frills or embroider- ed in

Some of the darning stitch. models made in this way are so tiny that they will fit a baby, of a week old; a wee bonnet is made to match.

Fine muslin, embo:dered with foe hand-embroidery, also looks charming, and certainly is more practical for every

Ribbons, bunches of silk day wear. roses, and any novelty motif that is small and pretty adorns this kind of jacket.

The modern baby's robe is never more than three-quarter length even for a! very young baby. For those mothers who can choose regardless of coat, the most delightful material is a hand-woven lined so fine that you can pull the whole robo through a ring. This is then made up with a mass of tiny tacks and hand embroidery, i paucl front, puff sleeves, and a small yoke edged with real Valen- ciennes laco

A short frock should always have a fair amount of lace about it; also touches of good embroidery insertion. One charm- ing little mode! I saw recently was trimmed round the hem with a row of tiny roses in groups, the centre of each rose being filled in with a morsel of tulle; other roses hung down in front gathers were let in on each eille of the shoulder for a width of two inches, and wee puff sleeves- edged with Valenciennes Ines were added.

Even shoes are dainty lacoy affairs, Paint Ince is chosen a good deal for this purpose, and it is lined with silk in cream or a pastel pink shade. The most charming of little mocassins, made of. white kid and edged with swansdown is another novelty which any mother would be delighted to receive as a gift for her baby.

Bonnete are made to sit the shape of the head, mul are either of net or silk muslin, or else of the finest hand-waven' linen which I have already referred to. They are trimmed with a mixture of lace and very fite omboidery, or else a frill of tulle that stands up all round the
