LIFE ON THE SEA. FROM TANKARD TO TABLOID.
The Channel's as bright as a ball room,"
say the great steamers in Que of Kipling's verses, and it is easy to detect a note of regret in their exclama tion. Perhaps because no one now re- members when seas were uncharted and unlighted, fo'c'les. dens, and sailors fed on hard tack until they got scurvy every one is inclined to feel that steam and the Board of Trade between them have nade ocean-going rather a prosaic affair, What would one of Drake's seamen, if he came alive again, think of one of Earl Beatty's ratings. or even one of Capt. Cook's crew think of the crew of a P. & O. liner It is a subject that might profitably exercise the imagination of Mr. Masefield. But, sentimentalism apart, one cannot regard the activities of philanthropists like Plimsoll and the paternal vigilance of Admiralty and Board of Trade with anything but de light. Ocean-going is a bard enough game, however much its amenities are improved. So one must rejoice to hear- that the Admiralty is experimenting with an extract of watercress, spinach, and other green plante in tabloid form which is called Phyllesan and which may super- sede lime-juice as a treatment for scurvy. Such a discovery. if it turned out prac ticable, would make a considerable differ ence to life on the sea. The Wrangel Expedition, for instance, would have been the better for it. But while reason compels cne to hope that Phyllosan will soon be as familiar a word in nautical quarters as fathom, sentiment still insists on having its say. Lime-juice, it tells us, is bad enough. Did Pew drink lime- julee? Did these gay vessels flying the Jolly Roger carry their legal minimunt of the teetotal liquori Would the buccaneers have given a bad doubloon for any menly-mouthed prophylactic against such a disease as scurvy! In so far na our modern steamers already carry lime- juice they have fallen away froin, this piratical virtue. But me-juice is nt least a drink; a fo'c'ale in which it is being consumed does not suggest a club. room filled with dyspeptic land-lubbers: And if one drink can be reduced to tabloid form why not another? Is rum itself safe? Or shall we have to bring our chanties up-to-date and sing in futureo! hol ho! and a little bottle of rum tabloids " Even the thought is enough to set all the drowned pirates turning in their ocean graves.-Man- chester Guardian."
According to the estimate of an organ iser with inside knowledge, the General Election cost about £1,500,000, of which at least £1,000,000 was drawn from the party chests.
