We bare dealt with it ha a simple matter of disease but the Bishop of Singapore bas seen fit to barge in with arguments based on we know not what, and we feel that it is necessary to put more of the simple facts before the public. The Chinese Protectorate is in possession of far more information ou the subject than any other body, and the memorandum sent to the Committee of Doctors by the Hun. Mr. D. Beatty is one of the most informing documentarie en France, we have seen with reference to "local conditions past and present. Mr. Beatty Trust Company has this pertinent ouervation to make: "If it is desired to deal effectually with the problem of Venereal disease from a medical point of view, it will be neces sary to do so without regard to religious scruples, which, in my view, it is illogical to apply in a country in which the vast majority of the population are hou Christian, and are roi infiuenced by the same standard of region as is supposed to exist in Europe; is a matter of fact the standard of morality in China is probably just as high as in Europe, but the disproportion between the sexes here, and the fact that the Colony is the meeting place of persons from all over the world, many of them with a low standard of morals, and the relaxation of the paternal intcence, which is so.
