any business can be dozio at all under the trying circumstaters The outlook in Canton, at present is not very encourag ing, but by the time the new orders come along peace may be restored and a time of profitable trading is sure to follow...
SENDRIES.:
A fair amount of business found its way to the order books during 1823 some of it on very poor margins, for competition was extremely keen. The Jines in which orders were booked are too numerous to detail, but quite a decent business was done in Fertilzers, Leather (Sole and Upper), Belgian Window Glass, Hardware, Watches, Clocks; Dyes, Laces,
etc.
In the middle of the year there was a heavy demand for Australian Solo Lea- ther, but this died down towards the
end of the year. American Patent Lea ther has been in good demand throughout the whole year. A good business was done in Sulphate of Ammonia, mostly with, British arms who were able to supply the qualities desired by the farmers. There was a fair trade in British and American canvas, but the increased cost of raw cotton crippled it.
The Chinese are becoming more and mere independent of the foreigner and quite a number of the larger dealers who used to order through the foreign hangs now place. their business direct.
Fac-
tories for the manufacture of goods pre- viously imported continue to spring up-- anone, too pleasant outlook for mer- chants
The practice referred to in our report last year of dealers making fraudulent transfers of their business has now been met by the Bill put on the Statute Book during the year. It was badly need and ought to put trading on sifer foot ing.

Shanghai of the Robert Dollar Co, has 67. received a fresh "cable saying that the body of Capt. Brandt, which had been thrown overboard, had been recovered and information was being seat to the Cap- tain's wife to that effect.
"I have not the full details of the story to hand yet," said Mr. Perkes when a C. Daily Anex representative in- quired how the surprise was effected, but apparently it was carried oat in the usual way. On these boat, the Chinese simply crowd on and receive their tickets after they get on board. Probably, the bandits boarded the ship as ordinary passengers with concealed arma”

COLLEAGUE OF CAPT. PLAST
Capt. Brandt, who was born at Hong- kong, was 48 years of age. He was for some time an engineer at the docks and also has bien an engineer employed by the China Merchants' Stearn Navigation Co. and most of the other lines plying the China coast. He joined up with Capt Pinnt about 14 years ago and was amociated with him until the latter retir ed, when he succeeded him as master of bis ship
The deceased captain was a keen foot baller, having played for the Engineers and the Recreation Club as fullback.........
An interesting sidelight was thrown on his character by his brother, Mr. R. J. Brandt with Messrs. Jardine, Mathe- Bon & Co.
Capt Braad was always a daredevil and absolutely reckless. He had often been warned, for he took no means of protection and, curiously enough, unlike most others who did the run, had never had a single shot fired at him.
On two or three, occasions, however, there were reports that he had been cap tured and once he was said to have been shot."
Capt. Brandt married about 10 years ago, and leaves wife and three sons.
