PARIS FASHION. NOTES.
[FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT,
ANTHAREL RAMSAY.}
PARIS, July 16th.
One of the most noticeable features of the dressing at the Gigud Hurdles at Auteuil was the appearance in multitu- dinous quantities of the parasol-umbrella that has been christened by designers the "Petit Fouvet" (Tom Thumb).' This' was in ovidence because the. Clerk of the Weather had once again sent dull skies, to greet what should have been a smiling Spring worn, and women who had don ned Autumn costumes brought one of i these mabrellas with them to add to the general air of smurtuess of their toilette, while women who had donned" Spring garh and dared the elements, "had ́also | brought one with them in case a threaten- ing down-pour should chance to become In reality, hence, daring and cautions
alike, carried a Petit Pouvot.
Like most of the necessities of life (enting, for example) the French have turned, the necessity of always' carrying an umbrella, which an unsonsoriabile elim- ute has reduced us, to, into one of the delights. An umbrella. at its best, is never more than a nuisance, to be toler ated with the best possible grace. There- fore, their task of making of it, a thing of joy was a difficult one, but when one kpaws the dishes of delight their whefs have made of such humble fare as pota- toes nul carrots, one is not surprised that their designers hava keen able to do as mitch for the hanble but necessary Cambrella. To its new form it is short and stumpy to a degrée; some of them are no longer than the forearm, with no more than an apology, of a ferrule and a minimum of handle. This latter generally comes under the headings of "stocky" er stampy," although there are models about to be seen that, aro neither, but retain the long, graceful lines of the parasols of yore.
lu the matter of decoration, carvings take first place. Handles are carved in a thousand intricate, and weird" designs, and very often the pattern is picked out in colours so that the must delightful of polychrome effects is the results de signers have not yet taken to introducing gold into these effects, pue enn hardly trave them to the Florentines of old," but, nevertheless, there is a great resemblance between the decoration of the modern unbrella and the works of art produced by these great masters of Florence. Some baudies are decorated with, the beads of animals or birds carved in u style more or less bizarre and certainly far more reminiscent of animais seen at the Salon d'Automne than those seen in nny 250. - Sume of the more expensive oues have wonderful händles carved from solid blocks of matrix amethyst, from onyx or from jaspar: some are perfect specimens of Chinese carving, fit rather 1 lar aside in a cabinet than to be paraded, at the risk of being lost, on ul otensions, some are run through with a cord, which serves both as an ornament land as a safeguard against loss, if the possessor lips her arm through it and s attaches it to her fair person; some, on the contrary, reverse this iden by having a large loop pierced through the ferrule end of the umbrella, xa that, when it is not unfurled and in use, it is turned upside davin and carried by slipping the arin through this loop.
When they are unfurled, one can easily trace the Japanese style that has in fluenced the designers who have created these modern versions of the umbrella. The smartest shapes are those which are the attest, and although Parisian am- brellas, and sunshades are inade of silk pand_lace, many of them could easily be made of paper and transported to Inr Japan. Furled, they look like slender Clubs or policemen's hatons.
The Petit Poneet type of umbrella is carried with all styles that are not copies either of 1830 1560 models with those latter only the sunil silk anil lace parasol can be carried. The modern version of this old style is as small, as a child's toy parasol, it is a muss of lace and silk frills..and it is mounted on a long, sien- der stick. The sight of these old-fashion- ed parasols being paraded about the lawns at Longchamp, accompanied by full panniered skirts, ruittens, shawls and poke bonnets, was a quaint'enough sight but such a frequent one that the eye became accustomed to it and it became ns ordinary a pond as tight, clinging lines were at the same meeting last year. One of the many 'advantages of the new um brella is that. by reason of its shortners of length, it will pack into any trunk or auit case and it is, therefore, not neces- sary to take one's umbrella case when
