The accounts are provisional, and trading accounts, showing profit and loss, are to be framed after completion Wachow, W Feet. of the work, but as the cost at March 31st, 19, is shown at £655,810, it pang moon, pears to be inevitable that a heavy loas will be incurred on the fixed selling price of £620,000. The Nivy Estimates. for 1929.3 include £114,000 for further direct expenditure on these ships, and the provisional figures in the cost a counts for overhead charges will prob- mably have to be considerably incrensed.. Referring to the fax production opera tions of the Ministry of Agriculture," the report says 'the final account was pub lished in the trading accounts for 1910-20 and showed that, although the Ministry's operations had ceased with the sale of the factories and stocks, sums amounting |to £400,000: were outstanding in respect

of that part of the purchase price which: was payable by instaliments. The report. adda:

Owing to the collapse of the fax market the purchasers have been un able to meet their liability to the Minis try to complete their payments, and in the present condition of affairs it is leared that only a comparatively reall sum will be received in discharge of this total of £400,000 and of the accrued interest thereon. The estimated loss of *£1,179,803 will recordingly be considér-

ably intronsed,

In addition to the loss on account of 'roquisitioned bacon, which at March-31st, 1922, stood at £8,314,328, there were losses. amounting to £3,539,071, or shout "43 per cent., on the re-control purchases betweed August 1919 and March 1921. The loss is accounted for by the drastic cut in prices necessary to effect clearances of stocki which would otherwise have been unsale- able after the discontinuance of control fin March 1921.2
