TRAINING LASCARS.

It is reported that the Shipping Master in Bombay proposes to start a nautical school for the training of Inscars. Those thus trained will have to pass an examina. tion and will be provided with certi ficates. The scheme is estimated to cost Rs. 3,000 a year and it is hoped that shipping companies will find this modest

BUM.

Lascars, hitherto, have only learnt by practical experience nad naturally Bome of them are more incompetent than others. What seems to be needed is a training ship.. Anyway, it is a good idea to afford lasears a preliminary training. It will give them a certain status which hitherto they have lacked and way help to solve the problem of recruitment and wagen which are now causing so much heartburning. Why should not Calcutta saya a paper of that city, also have a Even ex- training school for lasears? perienced hands may benefit thereby.
