OUR LONDON LETTER. PRINCE OF WALES AND THE BRITISH LEGION,
THE OLD SOLDIER AFTER THE WAR,"
་
[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
LONDON, October 5th,
"THE BRITISH LEGION.
The Prince of Wales, à à is an ex- ervice man in the meaning of the phrase that applies to the war, has done the British Legion a good turn by attending their rally at the Crystal Palace. By this dis. play of personal interest he has redirected public attention not only to the splendid non-political and non-sectarian organisation of comradeship and self-help known as the British Legion, but towards ex-Service men generally. Nothing but good results come from this personal display of interest on the part of the Prince. The British Legion has now established nearly two thousand branches, and has come to stay as a beneficent and useful force in the notional life.

THE OLD SOLDIER.
Some time ago the AB,C-took over Buszard's, the famous firm in Oxford Street, known all over the world as the place where rank and fashion go for wedding cakes, and now this Company has bought cheehold and leasehold properties owned by Lockharts, Ltd. Time was when Lockharts did a very big, business a caterers for the working-classes, and the name was 1 synonym for a good feed "at a small charge. Speculation is rife as to how Lyons will reply to the challenge."

WHAT IS BEING DONE.
Out of the 2,828 local authorities in England, Scotland, and Wales, only 1,105 are on the King's Roll. Forty-eight of the fifty-eight Metropolitan authorities in London are on the Roll, the absentee ten comprising nine Boards of Guardians and only one Borough. To their lasting credit, all the County Boroughs of England and Wales appear on the Boll, but only twenty- seven of the sixty-two County Councils, and about one-third of the 248 municipal corporations. LORD ROTHEENDRE
Lord Rothermore having acquired his late brother's (Lord Northcliffaj koldings in the Associated Newspapers, Ltd.-the combination which runs the Daily Mail, Evening News, and Weekly Dispatch becomes the head of the great newspaper organisation. This week he offered shares to the public, and in a couple of days the applications received amounted to about £50,000,000. Perhaps it is not surprising, seeing that the company have paid some thing like 40 per cent. per annum for years past Evidently there is faith in the prosperity of the concern despite the death of Lord Northclife.
The new head of the Daily Mail and sister journals has always been known us a quiet, clever, business man, of a very different turn of mind and temperament from his late brother. There are some good judges who declare that Lord Northcliffe would never have succeeded as he did with out his younger brother's common-sense and business ability." Lord Rothermore has the appearance of a good natured country squire, and, indeed, he is interested in rural life. He carries on farming as a hobby in a pleasant part of the country on the borders of Sussex and Kent, and, curiously enough,
he dislikes publicity. His accession to power

LONDON'S LORD MAYOR;
For the first time in bistory a charter. ed accountant, Alderman E. C. Moore, has been nominated for election as Lord Mayor of London. I hear very pleasant things said in the City about this, and also about Mr. Moore, who is very well-known and esteemed. He is a man who possesses a high sense of civic responsibility. A mem- ber of the Fruiterers' and Painters' Com panies, he is Master of the former, and has taken a great interest in the establishment. of the Chamber of Horticulture. He holds office as one of the Treasurers of the Bons of the Clergy, and is also a trustee, of the Crystal Palace and of Morden.
